DCM Timeframe TF400

Welcome to the DCM fan club! Cool, they are such good speakers for the $$.

These are the vintage DCM TW's and TF's. Not the new stuff they are putting out.

I am looking for some TF's for my son.
 
and I'm looking forward to receiving my 600's...
I'm going to wire them in parallel with my Altec Model 14's for my front soundstage. Each TF should sound & look good stacked on top of a Model 14.

I own a pair of TF-600s, and I recently bought a pair of TF-700s for my son.
Question: Are the 600s the only Timeframes with front and rear-firing tweets? The 700s don't have 'em, and they add so much to the soundstage!
Also, how do the 400s sound? Thinking about a set of them for rears in a home theatre setup.
Must admit, these little wedges are exceptional. The transparency and clarity are astounding. I'm relistening to my entire collection; it's like new music. I'm hearing things I didn't realize were in the recording, like music pages being turned, musicians coughing in the background, etc.

I can't speak to the 400's I have a pair of 350's that I used for rear surrounds until I switched them for a pair of CX-27's. I do use a pair 600's for the fronts and based on my experience with the 350's you will do fine using the 400's for your rear HT speakers. There is even a DCM center channel currently on E-Bay if you want to go with an all DCM set-up.

Well, I only really got to enjoy my DCM's twice. The weekend I originally posted...and about 3 weeks ago. Both times I fell in love, they are entirely transparent. Since my stereo stuff is still at my parents place, my dad asked how they sounded...so I hooked them up to the Kenwood HT box, which is a basic 50 wpc "HT in a box" unit..and I noticed something....the left tweeter was out. Didn't panic at first, i checked the fuse...when the meter said good...I started to freak out a little. After 10 minutes of labeling and swapping crossovers, I verify it's not the unit at all, the tweeter is actually bad.

So, I'm in the process of getting replacements for both (so they match). When they worked...my gosh...they were the most transparent thing I've ever heard. I had the speakers about 14ft apart and about 8 ft in front of me...and in the complete darkness you couldn't tell there were speakers....there was just...sound...it was balanced...it was clear...it even had thump..I completely re-fell in love with The White Album (and I don't think I can tell you about the vinyl transfer it was)...but..yeah..if I had two pairs of 400's, i'd use them all around...I'd even take an extra and use it as a center channel.

I can't wait for the weekend I slap the new tweeters in.
 
DCM tweeters can be a little fragile.
Too bad you did not know about this problem earlier I might have an extra pair of tweeters from a canabalized pair of 350's. I was in Manassas a couple of weeks ago.

Hope the replacement tweeter project goes well for you.
 
I once had a set of TF 600 and they too had those fragile tweeters, 2 were blown. As best as I recall PE at the time had the replacements. They were small plastic little things you could easily break when mounting!
Great sound when working but keeping them working was the trick.

The 350 woofer are a foam surround and the 400 is butyl rubber. I believe they are the same size, 6.5".
 
DCM has the manuals for the 350 and 400 on their site. I think the 400 is a dual woofer speaker with a true transmission line whereas the 350 is a hybrid TL design. Not real sure, just remembering some of the stuff I have read in those manuals.

They do. But the manual for the 350 has no technical specs like the one for the 400 does.

I am pretty sure the 350 has only one woofer.

I'll find out Saturday, I'm happily picking up a mint pair of 350's for my 23 yo son. Of course I'll plug them in at my place until his birthday at the end of March.

He is getting these speakers, and going to see Wilco at two sold out shows in April.
 
Welcome to the DCM club! It's nice to hear the enthusiasm of someone hearing these speakers for the first time; they are quite transparent and pleasant to listen to.

There are better, clearer soundstages out there from speakers that 'disappear' equally well, but most of them cost considerably more than the DQMs.

I paid towards the high end of the market price range for my 700s, simply because they are seldom seen here in Hong Kong (TimeWindows are a little more common; TimeFrames are rare here). In fact, I own the ONLY pair of TimeFrames I've ever seen in Hong Kong, and if I hadn't paid the price, I'd never have got them. It was still worth it.

I've tried sitting them atop the Gradient open-baffle subwoofers, which extend the bottom end right down deep, while adding a Heil AMT as "supertweeter", both to extend the top and also since the 700s don't have a rear-firing tweeter. That REALLY creates a large, enveloping sound stage, although it still doesn't equal the RS IIs.

As others have said, TFs are one of the best bargains out there in audio! And yes, they sound superb with tubes.
 
I lack any SACD equipment....im kind of picky about that and if I buy one, I want one with a pure dsd decoder, not the hybrid 88khz pcm decoding method....but the good dsd players are still more than a blu-ray player. I do however enjoy a lot of vinyl rips in both 44.1 and my own in 96 and have gotten a DVD audio in my pc at 96/24.

My biggest problem is I can't find out what tweeters are a suitable replacement. Im not sure if size is the only thing I need to worry about, but im sure there are some other specs I need to look at. The page with the tf400 ii's someone pointed me to where the guy had pictures of the rebuild was no help, I emailed him and never heard back. I'm getting the feeling finding the right replacement is going to be next to impossible since I can find exact specs and no one seems to want to throw suggestions.

Since I've got no money in them, im willing to spend money on a good tweeter.

I can't enjoy my Polks now either because they're on "loan'. Im stuck with my Bose TP cans, which are nice cans.

The 350 is a single woofer, mirror-imaged speaker. The 350 has the TW 1 sound, just not as much of it. So the DCM voice is there. I use the pair I rebuilt, surrounds from the bay and grille cloth from PE, for FM listening and other background music. XPN is a pretty good station.
 
Thank you. This gives me at least a jumping point to find replacement tweeters. The reviews seem favorable, so, that is likely the ones I'll pick up. I might look around and look at some of the other .5" tweeters. As I stated, I'm not bothered with putting slightly more expensive tweeters in 'em since I've got NOTHING in them. I thought about upgrading the main drivers too but will probably leave 'em since they sound good.
