Anyone done research on how good or bad Denon's DVD-5910 transport? What I mean is, how does it sound compared to others when used as a Redbook CD playback (transport to DAC).

dj-Amtrax it appears you own one of these units - at least one is listed in your signature line. How does it sound to you compared to your high-end Sonys?

I am using it solely as a DVD player and have not used it as a transport. Too lazy to pull it out and hook it up. Perhaps I should do some comparisons.
However, I have used it as a CDP with its internal DAC. The denon is a disappointment. Sound was harsh and lacked fullness of the Sony. Even my vintage DCD-3560 sound better than the DVD-5910.

It works extremely well as a transport, but honestly, for the DAC, I agree, you are best off with something outboard. However, if you want a solid DAC/transport combo, get their DVD5000 (only one w/ 2 dig inputs on the rear because it was really just that good).

If you want a serious CD transport, MCD1000, without question :)
