I have the sacd of layla and other assorted love songs and it sounds awesome but I noticed they have a 2008 remaster of the album on vinyl. anyone have both the sacd and vinyl and which one sounds better?

I've got both. Duane is just as out of tune on the SACD as he was on the vinyl.

I like both for different reasons.

Great music, but yeah, there's some tuning issues. Clapton's mentioned it in several interviews. I didn't think it was just Duane, though, I thought EC was shucking some clams, too?

I have the old Polydor vinyl and the SACD.

While I'm generally a vinyl guy, the SACD really holds its own.

I have not heard the remastered vinyl. You may want to find out if it is all-analog, etc.

Is that the problem in the song "Anyway"? I always thought that was a tape error. It's still a fantastic album.

On LP, the UK Polydor or RSO is best sonically. The US Atcos are inferior and the RSO pressings here are a crapshoot. The SACD is superb.

I have the SACD and I think it certainly reveals the limits of the original recording. Love the album but I think the master must be lacking because it's not very dynamic in most places. The exception is "Thorn Tree in the Garden" which sounds quite deep.

I have the original vinyl version, sacd version, and the 20th anniversary cd version. On the song "It's Too Late" on the anniversary edition, the first chorus is a different version than on the vinyl or sacd. Everything else on the song (as well as the record) is the same. I have always wondered why a different vocal take was used in that one spot.

what version sounds the best to you?

Well, the vinyl is not in the best of shape, so I would have to go with the sacd. The anniversary cd has some eq going on on some of the songs that sounds bad to me. I like the sacd the best.
I just realized I also have another vinyl version. Looks like RSO 1977 edition. This one is in good shape and sounds real nice.

As far as the title track goes, I would guess the vinyl has a great chance of sounding better because the 2 channel mix buries some of Duane's botched notes, while the SACD puts them out in their God-awful glory. Seriously, I was shocked at how bad Duane sounds in about 4 specific places on that track. Tom Dowd had the good sense to bury those mistakes. Sometimes just balancing out all the parts isn't good enough.

I did forget about the tuning issue. The piano in Dowd's studio was "custom tuned", meaning the piano tuner was more of an "artiste", tuning the piano slightly lower than standard A440.

This gave me fits trying to figure out the song on guitar.

I've not heard the sacd. Every lp I've heard has imho sucked due to the quality of the recording --a favorite but I can't get thru 1 side. Maybe it's just me.

Thank you Elitemav for starting this thread. It motivated me to order an SACD of Layla from Amazon, which arrived today. Sounds great!

cool man the sacd sounds killer I was just wondering if the vinyl sounds better but seems from what i gather the sacd sounds better

I think I am going to get the newest vinyl release of it just because it would be cool to have in my collection even if I decide I like the sacd better.

got the newest 2010 Imported Remastered Release on Vinyl yesterday and the SACD is definitely better. The SACD was mastered very well.
