Did I get duped or not? Pioneer CS-901A ePay scam

Hello fellow AK’ers!

So I put an ad up on my local Craigslist asking if anyone had any vintage gear they would like to sell and a get a response from this guy with a modest list of items. Among them are some sweet looking Kabukis..the above mentioned pioneer speakers. So I go online to do some research and the only pair I find is on ePay going for $1500. That seemed astronomical for me so I told the guy I couldn’t really offer anything based on my lack of knowledge on these speakers and no good comparisons for sale currently online.

Anyway, the guy says how about $500? So I go and demo the speakers and they sound good to my ears buuuut...he says that when he fired them up before I got there it took a while for one of the tweeter horns to produce any sound. So long story short I paid $400.

I get home and surf the web some more to make sure I didn’t overpay...a little late for that I know...and I see the ad on ePay has been taken down. So I put two and two together and realize maybe this guy put the ad up to make me feel like I was getting a heck of a deal. I feel like I got screwed. So...did I get duped? I love the sound of the speakers but I still have to ask what you all think.

You found an Ad for $1500 and he asked $500 you paid $400 not bad.More importantly you like them yes,that's all that counts:)
 
If you like them, then you paid what you thought was reasonable and should be happy.

If you only bought them because you saw an ad with an outrageous asking price, well, that's on you. Judging by the few pairs that come up when searching "sold" listings, you paid about the going rate.
 
It sounds like he went on the wrong site. If you checked eBay, he probably would’ve found some more accurate pricing. Not sure what “ePay” is burn it sounds like a cheap knockoff or something.

I guess you’re right. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t overpay. I thought maybe he had put the ad up himself because it came down immediately after I bought them so in my mind I figured this was a tactic that he used to make me feel like I got a great deal when in actuality they aren’t worth as much as I paid. Maybe I’m just being paranoid :dunno:
 
Really, it doesn't matter what someone tells you they are worth, but what you FEEL they are worth.

If you like the way they look and you like the way they sound,
it sounds like you got a nice deal on good speakers.
They are YOUR speakers, right?

They sure are. I’m just trying to gauge resell value since I’m always on the hunt for a better sound. But indeed they are mine...for now at least

The only restriction is that live ebay LINKS can only be posted in Dollars and Sense.

Anyone can ask any price for any item. Doesn't mean it will ever sell for that price.
And I don't see the ebay connection anyways, unless the ebay listing was the person the OP bought the speakers from or the seller used ebay as a reference for pricing.

Sounds somewhat like what Livestock sellers (Cattle, Horses) used to do w/each other when I was a kid-I want $1200 for my registered Angus Bull, I'll take yr 2 Registered Angus heifers that you're wantin' $600 apiece for, plus $100 for a transfer fee.. THAT went on all the time, only time any REAL money got put in play was if a Noob who didn't know it was all BS & whimsy decided HE wants the bull or one of the heifers... They DON'T call 'em "Hoss Traders" for nothin'... But I don't think you got hooked at all if you like the speakers, they sound nice, & look the same way...
 
58 lb each. Cast frame drivers. Fairly rare it appears.

AK thread from 2011 reports a pair bought for $80 (clearly a scroe) but two pairs recently sold on ebay for $600+. I'm sure the market price is in between there somewhere. :p

At that age, the crossovers probably need new caps for them to sound their best.

I agree with the others that if you like them and thought they were a fair price at the time they still are.

But it is an interesting idea to run an ad on ebay with a crazy high price to make them seem like they are worth more. I know I've had much better luck selling things on there for fair prices when other people had the same thing at a crazy high price.

That being said I agree with fleksta, click on the advanced search option and select sold listings to find what things are actually selling for not just what people are asking.
 
I get what you are saying about the eBay ad. He lists them for $1500, then you see a pair locally for $500 and think, wow, $1000 less.
You buy them and he pulls the ad.

Could have happened.

If you like them, and would pay $400 again for a pair, then you did good.
