Did I get duped or not? Pioneer CS-901A ePay scam

If you like them, and would pay $400 again for a pair, then you did good.

A LOT of people don't really know the nuances of 'starting bid' vs. 'completed sale' until it's explained. It may come as a shock, but many people do not buy and sell on ebay. They are not necessarily stupid.
 
maybe your right and maybe the seller was scamming
but after a quick search it looks to me like you paid about what they are worth
and if your lucky they will only go up in value
a pair in just ok condition sold for $500 on the US audiomart
 
if he was a scammer i dont think he thought it through enough .
wondering if it was same person they have put them for best offer . then sold off ebay to save fees .

Anyway, the guy says how about $500? So I go and demo the speakers and they sound good to my ears buuuut...he says that when he fired them up before I got there it took a while for one of the tweeter horns to produce any sound. So long story short I paid $400.

I get home and surf the web some more to make sure I didn’t overpay...a little late for that I know...and I see the ad on ePay has been taken down. So I put two and two together and realize maybe this guy put the ad up to make me feel like I was getting a heck of a deal. I feel like I got screwed. So...did I get duped? I love the sound of the speakers but I still have to ask what you all think.

Did you note the location of the pair on EBay? If it was where you bought the speakers, it could have been the same pair, but it seems like it would be a bit of a long shot for the seller to specifically place the ad after responding to your WTB solely for the purpose of establishing a high price for them. I mean, someone could think to do that, but it doesn’t seem likely. Plus he volunteered that the tweeter took awhile to make sound and took off $100 for that, so it doesn’t seem like he was trying to scam you in any way.

IF it was the same pair, I’d think it more likely that the price was set high to account for the fact that on eBay, sellers are pretty vulnerable to buyers abusing the system and claiming problems with purchases, so maybe that was his threshold for selling it there and taking the risk. A lot of speculation, but as others said, as long as you’re happy with what you paid, that’s all that really matters.

Looks like 400 is just under average going price. If he was trying to scam you he did a bad job.
 
There are always cheap one offs where the seller didnt know what they had or listed starting at a low price with no reserve, which could explain the low sell of the bottom one. Just look at all of the great deal threads up right now in dollars and sense.
 
It's not uncommon to see something like that on craigslist and ebay. I've noticed such listings before and shook my head.
Whether the seller really did that or it was just a coincidence, as long as you like their sounds, you've done alright.

I personally do not enjoy their sound :) , but at one point not too long ago, they sold for around a grand often.

You don't need to buy or sell on ebay to understand the difference between an asking and selling price, it's common sense, albeit a rare trait now it seems!

While I have never listed anything on eBay for a higher price than I was selling locally, I have waited to list locally until someone listed the same piece for too much on eBay. People see that high price and scramble to get the seemingly under priced score. All before they simmer down and do more research.

So I would say yes, people fall for this.

I'd say sellers as well as buyers.

It seems every time I talk to someone about pricing their used gear they start by looking at ebay, ... not sold but FS. Some people don't understand also that if it is only bid to $50, ... that means nothing until the snipers are finished and auction complete (and payment received, and the 6-month paypal return period is over, ...).

ebay certainly appears to be the most common go-to for pricing, yet few understand how to use it.

Happiness with the sound AND price are equally important. $400 is below ebay sold price so you are fine. Not a deal but you will be able to flip out when the time comes and enjoy them "rent free". As far as the ebay tactic goes, I think you are connecting too many dots. When dealing with buyers and sellers, I ignore everything and focus on what's real, i.e. goods and cash. If the item pencils out, I couldn't care less if the guy says he is Batman.

As others have noted, many folks see a price on eBay and assuming that is the going rate. That helps explain the asinine pricing often found on Craiglist when the seller obviously doesn't understand the difference between asking and sold for...or "free" shipping...or mint and trashed. Let's be honest here. The average person isn't that bright and half are dimmer than that :rolleyes:. And there are bright people with zero experience...

In my experience, the other 99% of the population do not have a life that revolves around audio like the 1% that is on AK...
