Where did you end up in Ash-tab-u-la ? , me and the Mrs. are in the next town east, North Kingsville. Sure didn't too look promising as the day started , we were glad the clouds cleared out just in time for a very cool , surreal , once in a lifetime experience. Though backyard cell-phone pictures don't do the whole experience much justice , I just had too take one.
As we drove from Northern Virginia we didn't have a lot of hope regarding the weather. As we got closer to Ashtabula the weather got better and better and it became apparent we were going to have very good viewing conditions. We were the only people in a small parking lot a few blocks from Walnut Boulevard, the road that runs parallel to the shore of Lake Erie. It was a great experience. My wife wasn't hyped about it going in but changed her mind afterwards and thought it was pretty epic. I got to cross an item off my bucket list.

I felt the same. The difference between the last sliver of the Sun showing and totality resulted in a huge difference in the darkness level. I saw this as an indicator of just how powerful the Sun is in regard to light output. For lack of a better word, I would say totality was a magical experience.
Agreed; I drove by some of the most beautiful scenery in New England including a snow covered Mt. Washington. As beautiful as it all was the totality was hands down the star of the show that day.
