Direct Drive Turntable Thudding Noise When Spinning

Man, I dunno about heating the shaft and doing any heavy duty pulling, pressing, or tapping. My Technics has a removable shaft assembly. With an obvious circlip (by arrow), which may cause major issues if you try to pull the thing apart with heat and force. BTW.. the main bearing is at the bottom end of the 1200MKII shaft assembly. Below the circlip.
Maybe, the OP can remove a comparable shaft assembly from his direct drive turntable. Then, remove the bearing. :dunno:

That ring below the ball bearing is where the circlip goes that keeps the spindle from falling out of the motor. I used one of those rubber things you use to open a tight drink bottle to see if anything on the spindle would unscrew without luck. @Mr Boochie what part are you thinking unscrews? Thanks everyone for the help on this endeavor :).

Also the trust pad in the other picture was not original, I was able to get it out of the bearing cap. Underneath that, there was a major dimple from where it originally sat. Someone replaced it along the way.
 
.Almost looks like it should unscrew where the clip slot is. If you shine a light in the slot, can you tell if the slot was machined or can you see any evidence of fine screw threads?

I'll take a closer look when I get home tonight. Thats what I was wondering though, something has to unscrew somewhere I would think.
 
The ring holding the bearing doesn't look like it's the same color as the rest of the shaft. Again, it doesn't need to be screwed on. The bearing cap may have been heated and then slid onto the shaft. When it cools it won't come off.

How many years does this turntable have on its odometer? I'd suspect improper previous installation of that bearing surface face, maybe a big issue. You may need to find another one of those, if possible. Or risk prematurely wearing out a new bearing.

I purchased it back in June I think, prior to that I have no idea how it was treated. When I bought it it was spinning too fast, like excess of 100 rpms, thats what the tech fixed.

After looking closer @infullview there are no screw threads that I can see or anything that appears to be pushed in place. I guess I'll have to live with a worn bearing then.

My only other idea is to put some nylon washers where the red circle is so that the subplatter sits on it rather than the bearing ball. Then upon reassembly I wouldn't tighten the bearing well cap as much so that it wouldn't rest on the bearing ball. What are yall's thoughts, would that be too much friction with the nylon washers? If it worked, I would rather replace nylon washers often than have to worry about the bearing. Try a flat plastic ply bar, like the ones used on car door panels. Ply around the slot in the spindle, carefully. You do not want to damage or scratch the spindle. If no work, use heat like suggested by infullview. And gently pry. Heat, pry. Several times.
I don't think you should eliminate this bearing, as it is supporting the entire weight of the platter, mat, and tonearm. BTW... what is the model of the turntable? Maybe there is an aftermarket spindle assembly... like the Technics 1200 has.

@Mr Boochie Sanyo TP 1000, I have looked high and low for a service manual, replacement parts, information, etc with no luck. I saw a couple posts on vinylengine where someone was aksing about the bearing about six years ago, it never received a response though.
 
I'd expect the nylon washers to mostly be there as a dust seal, not as any sort of a thrust surface. All of the weight bearing action should be on the ball bearing and the steel plate under it. Normally that will be hardened, and I'm surprised there isn't some lubricant down there.

A new bearing ball should help but with the surface it rides on having a divot it won't ever be new. If you can get a thin piece of Delrin or something to put down there as a new wear surface I'd expect it would help though. The trick might be if it moves the platter too far off the motor coils. The gap there is likely somewhat critical. If that bottom cap threads on and has sufficient engagement though, you might be able to cheat it and just add a spacer of the thickness of whatever you put in the bottom of the cup to maintain the relative spacing.

I wonder if they didn't swage the end of the shaft down just a wee bit to retain the bearing ball to make assembly easier. If thats the case, heating it might expand things enough to drop the bearing out. If the material files, I'd be tempted to stick it in the lathe and just face the very end of that off to release the bearing, and then just leave it as a pocket for a ball to sit in. You'd have to put a dab of grease in there to hold the ball during re-assembly but thats not a big deal.

I think the very end is a retaining cap that was applied with heat. I'd bet if it was heated up a bit and pushed with popsicle stick right where the clip ring goes, it would slide off. Just a guess of course, but I don't think it would hurt anything to try it.

Nice turntable! Kinda rare, though. I couldn't even find a "donor" used one (for parts), on the Net.
 
Thanks! I literally looked online everyday for 9 months before I came across It. I was watching videos on Technics 1100 tables and I saw it in a comparison video I thought thats what I want right there, so I started looking. So I just heat it with a blow torch and use a plastic pry bar or popsicle stick and see if it comes off? Would a heat gun potentially work, I have one that gets red hot? I'm just a little nervous heating it with a torch considering parts are non existent.
 
Heat gently, from a distance. That cap does not look that heavy duty, so you don't want to permanently distort or melt it.
