DIY Simple Active Preamp

Az,

That's a nifty looking circuit. Too bad the battery draw is so high, but a power supply will certainly take care of that.

Best Regards,
Terry

Yeah, it was eating 4x9V's in roughly a month. The small and simple power supply is better and plenty linear. It has a small Triad toroidal transfo, 4700µF smoothing caps, bypassed, and LM7818/7918 regulators.

The blue LED is across the +18V/-18V rails to balance the load and was way too bright with a 3.3k resistor. I had to bump that up to 100k to make it bearable to look at.

Hi az,

Good Idea! There's no sense walking around with a couple of big blue spots burned into your retinas!

A very cool looking project!

Best Regards,
Terry

Just checking in with all you good folk,

Finally (!) finished my SSP the other day thanks to time off for the holidays.

Still burning things in, probably got about 6 hours going here.

Absolutely loving the combo: Polk SD1's, Adcom GFA-545, and the SSP.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed, this is a freaking joy and a great project!

I'm letting mine rest a while- I need to build the PS and Lightspeed attenuator( I have the boards, no guts yet.) & get them all into a case of some sort. My #1 Winter project.

Bump, anyone.......updates?

I finished mine over the weekend, building inside an undesired sub crossover case, external battery and xlr outs wired to match the reverse wiring of JBL 6260 (subs) and 6290 (LE14's & 2431 on SAM1's).

Wow.

Listened to several of tracks with which I'm very familiar.

Patricia Barber - "If I Were Blue" & Steely Dan "Gaucho" incredible dynamics, limitless peaks.

Diana Krall - "The Girl In the Other Room" brushes on cymbals are crystal clear, you can hear the movement as opposed to background hiss.

Tedescki Trucks - "Relevator" super crisp kick drum and and bass.

I had been hoping to find a reasonably priced Adcom GFP750, I think I'll discontinue that search.

Thanks to HypnoToad for all your work, skywave-rider for your input and parts list and sachu888 for making the board available.

George,
Fantastic, one more to add to the "satisfied customer" list. I hope to be another one before Christmas. Could you upload a different picture? All I can see is pixels, looks like a Windows "Paint" zoomed all the way in.
Thanks,
Ron

Yeah, I tried to combine both photos in a single pic. Try these.

Well, I didn't make it before Christmas, but it did get built! I am very happy with how this combinations sounds. Good bass and clear & clean highs.
DCB1 is Hotrod modification. 6 inputs , SSP switching in or out to add gain.
Optivol, Omishra power supply (awesome job on that one) MM phono preamp
I've rolled several Opamps, the 04999 sounds the best to my tired old ears.
It really was fun to solder those chips to a brown dog. :)
Thank you HypnoToad for this amp. Fantastic job and well documented too.
I am making a smoked plexiglass cover for the amp. Building the bender now, but enjoying the preamp everyday.
Many thanks to Omishra and Sachin both are great guys and valuable members of AK. Nice people too.

Here are some pics.

My kids gave me Chetara years ago.

^^Nice build! Thank you very much for your kind words. I would be needing one SSP for myself too. It's seems F5 turbo too has little gain and hard to drive speakers with CNC phono stage at input.

Renron-That is a good looking build. You mentioned the Optivol. Are you using Greg Ball's kit? I have one of his early LDR kits that I want to incorporate with the SSP.

Nice build Ron,enclosure looks very good:yes: I am yet to build SSP for myself, will do it shortly.

Regards,
sachin

Omishra,
I replaced 2 of the resistors on the CNC phono with bourns pots, so I can change the gain.
I am very surprised that the F5T doesn't have enough gain. The V2 is 100W class A at 8 Ohms. What sensitivity are your speakers?
What Voltage are your rails? 32V? Source resistors? .5 Ohms?
In danger of thread drift so I'll stop.
Thank you for everything you have shared with us from all around the world!
Your "An International Man of Mystery". Yeah, Baby, Yeah.
(Austin Powers movie)

SFox52,
Optivol board is from Sachin, I believe the redesign is Omishra's. I'm going to have to swap out the pots for 5K because my LDRs do not match up as closely as I would like at low volume. But I REALLY like the "sound?" of the Optivol. It's not there.

SSP,
More of my listening impressions, IMO;
The 823 were obstructive and the music sounded slightly muffled. If you have high sensitivity horns these could be just the ticket. Try 'em out.

2134 Sounded good at first but listening over time became harsh, fatiguing. I've got metal tweeters that are pretty sharp already.
I tried a couple of others that I can't recall the # right now and they were similar sounding to the 823. A little dull / absorbed.

04999, I really enjoyed soldering those tiny, tiny little legs. This one has a permanent home in my SSP. The piano sounds like a piano, one of the most difficult instruments to reproduce. The resonance from the keys/chords floats in the air and decays clearly. This is hard to put into words but the "ring time" from each key struck is very close to our Yamaha piano down the hall. I guess you could call it "hang time".
I'm not into Jazz but I like Classic Rock, some modern Rock, Metal and Country & Western. They all sound wonderful and clear/realistic with the 04999 in the SSP's pockets.
Alison Krauss gives me shivers and makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck, she sounds so live. Damn, she's hot too. Doesn't hurt the eyes watching her DVDs. :)

OK, I'm back.........
I have the SSP downstream (after) my DCB1, I have it switched so I can use the DCB1 W/WO the SSP. I get about 1.3 gain with the SSP. I cannot hear a technical difference with it in the circuit (other than gain).
Because of the way I designed my preamp I cannot bypass the DCB1 and compare them side by side, but I'd be willing to bet that the SSP is VERY close to the DCB1 sound quality wise. I'm a BIG fan of Nelson Pass (Papa) and we all know the quality of his work. Impeccable.
For this design (SSP) to sound as good as it does is quite remarkable. I could be happy with just the SSP in my stereo system, yes, it is that good with the right Opamps.

This Preamp has replaced the 6SN7 John Broskie tube preamp in my system, and I don't see it returning any time soon. I'll miss the glow.

Thank you HypnoToad for the circuit, thank you Sachin for the boards.

Ron

George and Everyone else.
I humbly apologize for my mild lysdexia (dyslexia ;) ) , I would like to blame it on too many chemicals (at work) I've come in contact with over the years....but, I digress.
I should have named those Opamp chips as LME49990

I'm sorry for any confusion I may have created. LME 49990 is the chip I've reviewed. After a few more hours of being powered on, the preamp is settling in nicely. Not as cutting/sharp as before and the soundstage is deeper. I am thoroughly satisfied. :tresbon: I may try bypassing the 2.2 caps with teflons at a future date. If I do, I'll report back with my impressions. ( My wife has better ears than I do and "MY" impressions are a compilation of her and my opinions.)

Hey folks, late to the show (as usual)... are we breadboarding or making our own? I like Renron's using it with the DCB1, might just be a bit of what I need for my setup. Thanks!

Edit: Sorry folks, taking a while to wrap my head around the protocols around here, and thanks Renron and Sachin!

It does a little more. It properly loads the sources, it has a low output impedance and it has current capability that any passive doesn't have.

These are a few of the reasons that active preamps didn't die out when the "passive preamp" appeared so long ago.

I don't recall if I responded to this, I built a box in the early 1980s with a Noble 10k stepped attenuator as a 'bypass' tester for line stage pre's and found that in all situations I tried less was indeed more where the source was capable of driving thru the device to the power amp. I also found that the type and quality of the pot really really matters as does the switching in the selector and that all gold plating is not equal or even sonically acceptable. I'm still interested in finding a simple line-level gain stage that will allow the sys to sound 'better' (more alive and transparent) with, using the bypass box as the level control, than without the gain stage. I have yet to try these examples in the thread myself but just cannot overcome deep-rooted skepticism based on the notion of having to 'tune' the thing with cap and chip 'rolling' vs not having to deal at all with the 'sound' of any additional active device in the signal chain of custody.
