It's impressive that he could tell the difference with such accuracy. My question is: could he do as well in the test listening through speakers in a room?
I have pretty trained ears and I still cannot tell between my $200 modern R2R DAC and my $2000 (in 1998 dollars) R2R DAC, through headphones (Sony MDR-7506, so not exactly audiophile grade) or through near field studio monitors in a room.
