Do we need a "Gear ID forum"?

I've noticed a lot of posts lately "Can you identify this....." (feel the blank).
Maybe it's time for a new sub-forum "Gear ID" or something?
:scratch2:

Only Lately?!?

Actually, what AK needs is an "Please ID this speaker from a thumbnail sized screenshot of a cell phone photo grabbed from a CL ad" forum ;-)

Actually, yes, it wouldn't be a bad idea (despite my being a proponent of "forum deproliferation").

Much as I hate expanding to more sub-forums, that is the best idea for a new forum that I have heard in a long time. I would favor dumping the manufacturers forums and adding topics such as that.

g335: I don't think so. Given that AK already has quite a few sections/subfora, it would seem pretty likely, that many experienced users will most usually only regularly visit those they're most interested in - so for users, who want something identified, it would seem smartest to post their id request in the corresponding section/subforum.

NO, too much clutter already.
One is likely to get an ID in a dedicated forum ie. speakers than an obscure forum where few will go.

No that is what Dollars and Sense if for......

Really? My understanding of D&S was " To provide a forum for the discussion of values of audio/video and related equipment." and " The discussion of the process of buying and selling, including methods of payment, and the resolution of disputes."

I guess you could stretch component ID enough to fit that description.

If I wanted an ID of a piece of gear, Dollars and Sense wouldn't be my first choice.

Another forum that very few people would visit would be a waste of bandwidth and time. I think Dollars and Sense works because on a lot of the "ID these speakers" the next question usually is "what are their value?"

I remember when I was a newbie
..everyone was tolerant of me. Pay it forward...don't want the new members to feel snubbed. All audio no attitude..

True, but there are also those speakers found at a thrift, yard sale or in a recent case a dumpster. The purchase is over (if there even was one) and the new owner just wants to know what he just took on.

That said, I still wouldn't want to see a dedicated sub-forum. Such pleas for ID can go in an appropriate forum that already exists, be it D&S or another. Such threads are commonly started by new members who post in the wrong place anyway.:nono:
