i recently vacationed in the wonderland known as 'northern california' and felt like i moved through a waking dream while there. the physical beauty was overwhelming to this prairie flat city dweller. while there, i met a local who, when he discovered we were from dallas, got a kind of wrinkled, quizzical look on his face. finally, he overcame some internal resistance and said, 'let me ask a question-- what do you DO for recreation there?' his origins in the land of the forests and mountains and oceans and surfing, and skiing and hiking and so forth and so on clearly had him puzzled as to what we DO in a flat, hot, huge urban area such as Big D.
when i look at my city through the eyes of a visitor, i really do find myself puzzled. what do we DO here? the answer, of course, is a lot, but it ain't northern california. we ride bikes, swim in pools, row at white rock lake or bachman lake, or go boating or skiing at several of the surrounding lakes, canoe the trinity (for real, yes, there is an active paddling community here), hike the growing number of urban trails, enjoy the nightlife, etc etc etc and if you live in a diverse inner city neighborhood like i do, you enjoy the texture of everyday life...
