Does anyone else dislike Halloween?

I'm all for celebrations with a good reason but Halloween has always been one of those silly ones I never much cared for. Where I lived inclement weather made Halloween get "cancelled" essentially. I saw no signs of anything this evening, and so I went out to wash my car. When I'm driving back I see the trick or treaters everywhere. It's very dark out and that's when they all decided to start...very foolish. So I'm driving back going about 15 mph in a 25 and someone hollers at me "SLOW DOWN!". I think their impression of how fast a car is moving from sitting on their porch is highly inaccurate.

I just take great offense at that, I had my high beams on and my driving lamps so I could easily be seen and I was cruising in 2nd gear (I have a catback exhaust system) so it was easy to hear me as well, AND I was going slow. I guess because I wasn't going 5 mph I'm a speed demon, or because I didn't go 2 mph through a turn (a very open turn, not a blind one). My car handles well and has excellent brakes and tires, so I don't slam on the brakes through turns like many other panicked motorists. It was a long straight road and I was at the top of the hill, so I can easily see everything ahead of me. I guess they heard me in 2nd and thought I was about to nail it, though I don't see how since I wasn't really giving it that much gas.

But mainly it's the "give me candy for knocking on your door" thing. I don't know how anyone trusts people these days, I don't even eat food cooked by anyone I don't highly trust (and I still don't eat from some family members). One of my family members takes meat out of their fridge and sets it on the counter with no covering for way longer than I'm comfortable. I don't trust that other people didn't wash their hands, leave things sitting for too long, a whole range of things. Sure candy is prepackaged, but still...if I had kids I'd just buy them the bags of candy right after Halloween, although that's hardly a great thing for kids to be cramming down all the sugar and chocolate. Halloween parties are ok, but people in costumes walking down the street has always struck me as just weird. Not to mention all the bad things kids/people do around Halloween, egging people's houses and cars for not giving candy (That happened to us before and we weren't even home...), TP'ing houses, etc. Our city's zoo and a few other places have more official trick or treating, and that's where I think it should occur because it's sanctioned and all the people giving out candy work at the zoo. No risk of anyone walking in the street either.

I'll just be glad when it's over. I don't eat much candy myself (I used to, but I've gotten myself to pretty much not eat any sweets except an Oreo once in awhile). I see so many kids that are young, out walking with no adults that it makes me think some of them just want their kids to get away from them. I don't blame them for feeling that way, being someone who doesn't really like kids either, but if you're a parent you don't have that choice anymore. But now I'm soapboxing, I'll stop.

I used to love Halloween, rarely do I get a Trick or Treater anymore still its a fun holiday for the kiddies!

I'm not crazy about it, but I don't mind other people doing it. I DO appreciate a good costume, especially the home-made variety (some of which are fantastic).

I was a victim of a really lame Halloween costume as a kid ( I had no say in the matter) and I think that soured me on the deal. One of these days I'll go whole-hog (costume-wise) for a party and maybe I'll understand the hype.

I definitely agree with some of your concerns, but on the whole, I'd say just relax. If you don't want people knocking on your door, just turn out all of your visible lights. Driving slowly for 1 evening of the year isn't a big deal (not saying you were driving too fast, but parents are naturally concerned). Bad things do happen but they'll happen whether or not you like Halloween, so there's no use in fretting. On the whole, it's a magical night for kids, and I'd never want to spoil that for them.

I admit, I am biased. Usually I spend the better part of a day rigging up my front yard with scary goodies, animatronics/trip beams, sound effects, etc. I love making our house stand out as a destination for trick or treaters. I loved it as a kid so in turn I do my best to make it awesome for the people nearby. Unfortunately I haven't been able to the past two years as I'm up in MT for school. All you see up here in the dorms are a bunch of drunken @$$holes with really lame costumes.

Halloween is easily my favorite holiday of the year! In fact, it's the only one I really care about. Kind of like St.Paddy's day but I'm not Irish or Catholic, and I quit drinking- that knocks out everything about the American version of it.

Halloween is probably different for me than most. I'm non a believer/religious, but on that one day I like to contemplate the idea of "another world". In ancient times the Irish believed that the veil that separates our world from the spirit world was thinner in old, lonely abandoned places like bogs and mountain tops. While I don't subscribe to notions of metaphysics I think that's a lovely idea. On that one day every year I spend extra time thinking about everyone I know that has passed on, and I at least contemplate the idea of spirits.

Plus, the costumes are fun!:D:yes:

You sound a bit like my father-in-law.
When he was younger, he had snowmobiles (think "two-stroke" noise) and his kids would ride them in the yard in the winter, or play hockey in the street, etc.

Now, years later, the neighbor behind him has kids who ride a 4-wheeler around the yard and another one (two acres away) with a dog that barks a lot, and the kids next door play hockey int he street.

Guess who he thinks are a-holes for being noisy?
Perspective, perspective, perspective.

Every holiday is hyped up. I like Halloween personally.

How is "give me candy because I knocked on your door" any worse than "lets put ourselves in debt because of the birthday of a guy from a book" or "lets get S**tfaced drunk because of a Mexican holiday. Or "lets get s**tfaced drunk because of a Irish holiday*. Honestly Halloween isn't the worst of the holidays. It's one day a year and is easily the most creative of the holidays. Not to mention it's pretty much the only holiday that doesn't try to teach kids false history.

I don't "celebrate" Halloween, but I do enjoy handing out candy to all the neighborhood kiddies. I am not a big fan of parents carpooling their kids all over town unless they live out in the sticks. It's best left a neighborhood thing.

As for the OP I would say, lighten up! Life is way too short to be that untrusting and tightly wound!

I used to love it, but not anymore. Not sure if others are seeing this but, in my neighborhood, kids are vaned in in droves. There are five to ten parked at the top of the street at any given time with little goblins piling in and out ( and some not so little).

One out of five of these kids have two bags, one for me and one for my little brother (who in only 6 months and can't trick or treat yet, or is sick and can't make trick or treat). Or the younger sister is in a baby carriage, pushed up to my door by the parent who then hands the older sibling the plastic pumpkin bag expecting me to give their little baby, with an orange matching pumpkin hat, a candy bar.

After two years of seeing this trend worsen, my wife and I are through. :thumbsdn:

We turn off the lights, go downstairs and watch tv until "gimme gimme gimme" time is over.

Is that your equipment list in the bottom line? No wonder you can't afford to have kids take extra candy. :D

When we lived in an apartment, we dressed up and went out to the old neighborhood to walk around and hand out the candy. :thmbsp: Have taken my cat out around the neighborhood as Holloween was his favorite day. Getting out and being involved is the best part.

I like Holloween and the chance for the kids who earn it to get a treat. I also like to scare a few here and there. It's the abusers that I don't like but every holiday has those. Too much commercialism and greed with every holiday.

Just turn out the lights and tell the little beggars to go elsewhere. :D

Sheesh, it's just Halloween. We put up tons of decorations and have fun. Turn off your lights and hide in your basement.

I love Halloween. Kids have fun, women dress like sluts, and you spend the whole day trying to scare the crap out of everybody. What's not to like?
