Does Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC have motor hum issues?

Widespread reports all over the internet? I just don't see that. I scoured the net myself before buying the project carbon. There were a couple of threads on this site, one or two on AVS, and on other major forums. I certainly didn't find widespread reports. And I'm not saying the only electrical noise is from ballasts. Yeesh, there could be dozens of different sources of electrical noise outside of one's home, let alone in one's home.

I mean, I understand it's a design with various compromises. Just look at it. But no company would survive if their product was actually faulty. They'd go bankrupt. There would be class action lawsuits. Parts suppliers screaming for payments, courts laying charges and the like.

Some of the motors are defective for sure. What percentage, hard to say. People that have a working product are much less likely to find a forum and post reports than those with issues. So you can't extrapolate based on numbers of complaints. I'd guess the percentage is up to 5%, maybe a little over?

And a small percentage of people have some kind of power based interference. And a small percentage really don't know what they are doing and may have a connection/grounding issue. Mine sounds very good for the money. I'm seriously happy with it.

I would never buy a table that has a 50% of not working right out of the box.

I would never buy a table that you need to put more money into it when new just to make it right.

I bought my son a Debut Carbon DC with 2M cartridge for his Birthday and no hum issues so far. His front end is a Rotel RC-1070 pre and RB-1070 amp.

And if you ever find such a table, do let us know about it. A link to the 50% stat would be an interesting read. A company with a 50% failure rate will quickly go bankrupt.

Ballist fixtures could very likely cause a turntable to hum but the widespread reports all over the web of the Project hum is unlikely for all of it to be caused by ballist fixtures. There have been some fixes by owners, if some owners can fix the Project hum why can't Project fix the hum? If I was buying a new turntable I wouldn't want to have to fix it for starters. Projeect buyers aren't getting what was advertised and what they are paying for. It's a combination of poor design, materials and quality control, you don't even get what you pay for.
Did you ask them?
I got it! A great TT for the money that works flawlessly. Debut Carbon DC, btw.

I also would like to see those 50% of Pro-Ject's Debut Carbon DOA cases. :smoke:

Did you ever consider the new Rega RP1 table. Included, a new Rega RB101 tonearm with the Ortofon OM5e moving magnet cartridge.
This table has no hum, rumble or whatever coming from the motor or from the platter. This is the entry level Rega, but a high quality entry level table nonetheless.
You won't have to worry about hum, a fix, or anything else with this table.

Around, 420.00$ to 430.00$ USD, about the same price as the Project Debut and less expensive than the Music Hall MMF

Music Hall and Project are twin, same arm, same motor, same factory.

Great table, but I don't like the cartridge. I had one on my humming Debut III. It picked up the motor noise pretty well, but no detail. Very flat cartridge.

I'm sure you can find that at lest 50% of the threads about this table here alone are in reference to issues with this table, search the site if your that interested.

Like I said, I scoured the net when researching my purchase of the Pro-ject Carbon, and your 50% number is obviously not defendable.

To the OP: we are an authorized dealer of Rega and U-Turn products. I have an Orbit Plus and a RP1 in the shop for demo. Both for the money are an excellent value. I have not had one return of either model except one Orbit for an upgrade to a Grado Black cart since the customer did not care for the AT cart.

I really like the platter on the Orbit Plus, the arm seems like the model's weak spot. The motor start up is fun the way it tilts slightly and centers when up to speed. It holds speed exceptionally well. Orbit plus uses a wall wort type power supply and has RCA jacks on the back so you can choose your desired interconnect. We have tried it with the factory cheap RCA and several of our Audioquest interconnects which gives you appreciation of a good cable.

The Rega gives you the look of an extra $135. Looks are not the only part though, the arm is excellent for the price point. I like the Rega Carbon cart it comes with but there is room for improvement there. The phenolic platter is what it is. The noise and vibration dampening is excellent. It has a fixed power cord with internal power supply and fixed interconnects. Personally if you can swing the extra cash I like the RP1. Of course it is the entry of the Rega line and the performance pack down the road makes it even better.

Both tables come with dust cover and fairly useless hinges. Speaking of useless I hate the felt mats both come with; cork replacement right away. Neither table is going to compare to a $1k+ model but for the money they are both good choices.

I've seen Pro-ject tables and I'm not going to put down a product I have little experience with simply because I do not sell them. Others have given their opinions which I take AKers thought's to heart when choosing brands for my shop. Good luck with your purchase and if you have any questions about either table feel free to ask away. I wish you were closer I'd invite you down for a demo.

First off I don't have to defend my comment to you or anyone, my opinion is mine. Your not looking or reading this site enough to see what others keep getting when they buy this table. Hell just look at the comments in this thread here.

It's fine to have an opinion, but when you read this thread and all of the other Pro-ject threads on this and other forums it's clear that the majority of posters have properly working turntables out of the box. And since unhappy customers are much more likely to post than happy ones, it's clear that the percentage of defective motors is quite low. Believe whatever makes you happy.

Runnin I believe that's what your doing, believe whatever makes you happy. You can just put the blinders on and ear plugs in and ignore that there is a Project hum. I'v read so many threads re the Project hum it's old school now.

I know really, this guy is kinda fixated if he got a good one fine but the denial is uncalled for.

I can't help but cringe when a new member comes here for advice and Fanboys lead them into buying one. A few weeks later the new member starts a thread with the common complaints.:thumbsdn:

Hearing or reading about something, and having own experience are two diametrically opposed worlds.
On this thread can be seen how people with zero experience are trying to convince everyone how one product is faulty or DOA out of the box, which is totally wrong and untrue!
Pro-Ject Carbon DC models are running just fine, and it is possible that some owners have issues but only because they do not follow the rules or don't read the manuals. Also well documented on many threads, especially about the OLD models - no DC!

"Own Experience"?

Then it would be fair to say that your experience is limited to the Unit/s you own?

If yours works fine for your good, however, it's not the case for everyone. In fact, there is a high rate of complaints from people that buy this deck. Peoples reviews and opinions are important and just as valid as yours. For the life of me, I don't know why you think you know more than all those people with complaints, assuming they're inept at operating and playing records.

"Zero Experience"?
So another assumption about poster here, many of whom have been into audio as a hobby or trade for many many years. Some have owned many, many tables of all different levels of make, quality and price points. But again, you feel the need to discredit their opinions and reference points and the knowledge they have gained.

Reviews, opinions and sharing information are important to grow more knowledge, be it pro or con it needs to be stated or the conversation is mute as it's just a bias. We can just go to the manufacturers sales pitch at that point.

Some people really like to push their agenda, no matter what!
Interesting enough how they do not even care about the title of the thread, and the TITLE goes - ''Does Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC have motor hum issues?''

Debut Carbon DC it is, and Debut Carbon DC has ZERO to possible few issues (??) regarding so called - HUM!

Here are just few quotes from ''forums.stevehoffman''

mdphunk, Apr 4, 2015,
The only way I have ever heard hum coming from mine is with the dust cover on. I always remove the dust cover when I use the table for this reason and because it just looks way cooler without it.

Alobar, Apr 10, 2015, Well the good folks at Crutchfield let me return the Debut Carbon with the hum issue for a new Debut Carbon DC. Plugged it into the same exact set up and BAM NO MOTOR HUM!

Corey Louis, Mar 5, 2015, I never had this issue with the Carbon when I used it as a secondary table

pbiancardi, Mar 5, 2015 ,I have never heard on mine either
but if you google it appears to be widespread??
(here is interesting how simple quick ''google'' (re)search showed quite opposite!)

Stan94, Mar 13, 2015, I bought this table 2 days ago and I've yet to notice a hum. It's much better than my previous TT, a Technics SL-QD33 with a Shure M94E T4P cartridge (hadn't my daughter broken the stylus, I wouldn't have upgraded).

Musicgal, Apr 3, 2015,
I have the DC model and have not noticed a hum

BeauZooka, Apr 4, 2015, I have the DC also. No hum.

Deryl Johnson, Apr 4, 2015, I have the Debut Carbon with the Speed Box S. No hum at all 33 or 45. I got the new Dead 45's and they sound awesome. No Sweet Lemon here. If it would've hummed I would have returned it. Best turntable ever, and I've had seven over the years. Pioneer, Technics, three different Duals. This Pro-Ject is the king.

To make the long story short - even this short ''google'' (re)search shows how many issues with the NEW DC version of the Pro-Ject's Debut Carbon. - NONE!

oh, and btw. I am hard with critics to Pro-Ject's ''low-mid end'' devices. I own three of them. I also have two threads on this forum alone where I'm showing my modifications on RPM 1.3, now already very old model. Even sent those to Pro-Ject, to show them how I was not so pleased with their solutions; on motor, and the base/plinth. Interesting enough how they finally have changed something (more weight) on the central plinth point, with their ultimate RPM version!

I know I've seen on here, among other places, of the motor hum issues with the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this was still an issue with the DC motor? I see Musician's Friend has a 15% off right now and they now sell the Debut Carbon DC. It seemed pretty tempting. But I'm not in favor of having to do some DYI fixes on a $450 turntable to stop the motor hum.

Yes indeed an agenda:scratch2:

I could care less I'm not a fanboy nor will I spend my money on a table that has a 50/50 chance of not being right out of the box.

That's my opinion and choice.

A lot of attitude, and a lot less care about the TOPIC! But the topic remains the same all the time.

Assumptions based on imaginary or old facts help no one!

Even on this thread alone owners of the Debut Carbon DC (and not the readers of old threads around the web) prove there is NO HUM issue with this turntable!

The hate going on is interesting. I find in this forum, the old school guys with their 30-40 year old equipment typically find that their stuff is better than anything produced today, and that goes for turntables as well. There's a lot of hate for certain brands too, and anything over $2-300 or so. And the rubbish found at Sally Ann is held up as pure gold around here and everyone claps. Sorry, but every now and then I can't help but LOL!

It's claimed I'm in denial because I don't think that 50% of Project Debut turntables have defective motors. I've already said that I know the Pro-ject Debut is a design with various compromises, but there is no evidence of a 50% failure rate. I've repeatedly asked for documented proof of this, since if that were the case Pro-ject would have gone bankrupt by now. But nah, it's much easier to repeat the same chorus, albeit at a louder volume.

For one thing I made a comment in regards to the OP. It had nothing to do with the equipment you have and it doesn't matter but people are entitled to their opinion on this site and my comment stands.

Now that you are so bold and want to put down what others own on this site, what's your referance point? what are you working with? What puts you on such a high level of audio?

My system is here and it took me time and knowledge to assemble it. Have a look and maybe there is some equipment that I own you can find fault in, I know I can.

And please do post photos of your system and let us all see your refrance point to audio bliss.
