Does This Look Like A Tube Unit

Or ask him to look for the Civil Defense"CONELRAD" Markers at about 640 and 1240 on the AM dial. Looks like a Circle with a triangle inside the area between the circle and triangle filled. If it has them it's a pre '64 model as CONELRAD was shut down in the summer of '63. This usually correlates with the turnover from tubes to Solid State for a lot of manufacturers. Fisher for instance switched over to transistors in the 64 model year on their Lower end models and by the 67 model year had transistioned to Solid State (with the exception of the 400-500C-800C and a few separates. ) Magnavox switched over to Solid State in the '64 model year totally. Some were quick to change, others slower or they just got out of the business. So the Conelrad markers can be used for tube/S.S. identification in about 80% of units.

If he hasn't responded it's probably already gone if the price is reasonable. Lots of interest in those old tube units these days.

The guy never did get back to me so it's probably already gone.

I did find another GE with a similar or maybe even the exact turntable. I went and picked it up awhile ago. It has 7355 power tubes. It has a MCM cabinet but it's in rough shape so I'll pull the amp and use it for something else. I does work and for $20.00 I don't think I can go wrong.

Will this amp work okay for a guitar amp? I don't need a lot of volume because I'll just use it at home with an Ovation Custom Legend. The Ovation has stereo pickups.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I finally got in touch with the guy that had the first one I was checking on. He still had it and it was now free. I got it today and by looking at the cabinet I never would have thought that it had tubes but the amp and turntable looks like the other one that I got. It's a lot cleaner too. The turntables are Vacu-Magic and have a vacuum connected to them.

I got a lot of vinyl with it but there are lot of scratched up ones in the bunch.

LOL...I'm a bit late to this thread...but yes...that is a GE.

I've gotten two of those...and still have one.

Yes...has 7355 output tubes....on a circuit board....mounted in a metal frame..

one of mine had a spring box reverb unit...and a small mono amp to run it....( in addition to the main amp....)

Cademan, the post with the photos did not appear on the thread when I posted the comment about the TT. Not a complete dunce here.

Did it have a control for the reverb? I don't think either of mine have one but I'll check again.

I've read about the PCB getting cooked. Did you have any problem with yours?

I'm not Cademan but it looks like Danrclem posted at 2:50PM in post #24 and yours showed up at 5:38PM so pics were there for the new one. It seems his freebie was the same amp as the pic he posted from somewhere else. I know, it confused me also for a sec. No offense, Just pointing it out.

Thanks CT!

Sorry Edward, no offense intended! I see you're fairly new here so I hope this won't be a negative impact on your experience with AK. Enjoy yourself here!

A guitar amp ? It would probably be great, especially using the original speakers. I would consider putting resistors in series with the B+ to get that sweet distortion out of it, and to modify the tone controls to get the "twang".

I fixed an old something or other guitar amp, didn't really look like much, looked cheap. But once working it had it baby. You never know. OH, it was an Airline, which was Monkey Wards line. It actually sounded BETTER than some of the old Ampegs and whatever else tube amp heads we have around.

Normally, a stereo audio amplifier will not have enough gain to support a guitar pick-up. You would have to add another tube and/or gain stage.

Would a mono console amp be a better choice for a guitar amp? I'm not looking for a lot of volume, just nice sound.

The two amps are the same type but different units. I got both of them within the span of 2 days. They both have the Vacu-Magic turntable too. Somewhat of a coincidence.

Thanks CT!
