Dog "Shock" collars

My daughters BF volunteered for the test, took it to the max, said it really wasn't that bad :dunno:

Its not that bad. I did the same and pain was never felt. It is just a sensation they are unfamiliar with and not like they are being beaten with a stick. The dog we used it on will yelp if she even remotely thinks she might be hurt. She never yelped or made a noise from the few times the collar gave her shock.
 
I guess it all depends. When I tried the one the previous owners sent home with our dog, which they had set at 50 out of 100,I was expecting what most folks describe... A mild to moderate tingle. Nope. This made me yell in surprise. It really hurt, and I'm not a wimp or stranger to pain.
Today, I messed around with it a bit on my forearm. Anything above 4 out of 100 was singularly unenjoyable. Of course, my forearms don't have the fur coat dogs do.....

Daughters BF might be a ringer, he did complete hell week and graduate.

All kidding aside, I agree with the not being fur covered thing, but now I'm left wondering how much of a difference in conductivity there is between different people :idea:

I would love to say that, and it was true for me, until this dog.

Lots of different models out there. I'd say yours is a flawed design or execution. I tested mine on my forearm and neck. It's reminiscent of a 9v battery on the tongue (which I remember well from my wastrel young days) and definitely gets your attention. For mine, any setting above 50 is uncomfortable. That's where I stopped because I wouldn't subject my dog to something I found painful.

BTW, the prongs/probes on the collar go to the skin.
 
My son tried out my daughter's hand-held tazer on his thigh while they were both at a party in college. He fell to the ground in pain.

Sadly, I would have done the same thing at his age. The one thing I won't test is an electric fence. A fence meant to keep a bull in scares me.
 
You can't really compare different collars as they all seem to be implemented differently by brand. I've tried some on my arm that was only "uncomfortable" and others that made me yell and throw it across the room ....
