Dual 1019

Just back from the GW, where I saw this Dual 1019. Missing cartridge and spindle, dirty, but plugged 'er in and she spins. At $4, I couldn't just leave it.

There's a cartridge adapter of some sort, almost looks like a p-mount adapter? Can't be....

What have I gotten myself into?

It looks like the cart carrier is there..which would be removed by sliding the metal lever back. Youre lucky to get that nice of a Dual for that price with the carrier..normally if theres no cart the carrier is gone too.
So it looks like youve got some cleaning to do, the single play spindle shouldnt be a prob. What youve got yourself into is one of the most desirable of the Duals for the price of a cup of designer coffee, congrats.
 
OK, what looked like a P-mount adapter is actually the back of the Shure cartridge that was originally in the carrier, says Shure on the top. Must have fallen apart, or someone tried to remove the cart at the GW, and got the front of it. So, looks like I have a standard 1/2" carrier... Contacts a bit oxidized, maybe the stuff I use to clean the HO train tracks will help?

Wait a minute, it is a P-mount adapter - just snagged the cart from my Technics linear tracker, it plugs right in.... Gonna clean this up and give 'er a try...
 
No, it's just a piece of nylon with standard 1/2" mounting holes, and P-mount holes on the back with a screw hole for the cart.

Gonna need some work - the arm won't drop, so can't even set the VTF, and the platter keeps on spinnin', after pushing the lever to "stop". Strobe shows the speed is on, but only with the pitch control all the way to +.

Can't say I'm real fond of the shape of the plinth...

Like I don't wanna go there.... I'm thinkin' of putting this on BT, just don't have the need for this, or the desire to deal with cleaning, lubing and troubleshooting this thing. The Technics SL-1311 I rehabbed was simplicity compared to this...

OK, OK, so the plinth (I'm assuming you mean the wood base) isn't that great. You just stole a 1019 for FOUR bucks.

Get 'er cleaned up and address the other prolly minor issues. Usually gunked up lubrication.

The idler will prolly need cleaning or replacing too. That 7 pound platter demands an almost perfect one.

I love my 1019 and IT cost me about 18 bucks!

EDIT: Gosh, it looks really clean underneath!

Looks like you will need to givei it a thorough cleaning. The grease has dried up causing the switch to stay on and or the idler wheel is gummed up and wont release from the platter.

Get used to the plinth. That deco style base was the nicest base United Audio (US distributor) offered. After it they were down right junky and cheap. The German bases Dual made were much nicer. If you decide to not use the base let me know. I will buy it and give the straight base they came with after the one you have. I had one in high school. Got one on my 1019.

You have one fine TT there my friend , no 2 ways about it . The 1019 is what I use for listening, fixmydual.com if to need any part or good info. Nice score and oh , just forgot ..."I hate you"
 
OK, OK, I'll spend some time on it... I was able to get the arm down, listening to the Allman Bros. right now, at least the left channel's working, sounds pretty good... A 1/4" to 1/8" phone plug adapter works pretty well as a spindle.

It ain't gonna displace this, though :D

I found my Grundig-Dual 1019 in a backlane last year for free with very nice base and part of a dust suction set-up on left rear top of base!:thmbsp:

I remember when the 1019s first appeared in the catalogs in the sixties and I saw that rear end of the tonearm and I thought, "Now, that's a serious record player!"

I bought my 1019 at GW in June for $12.00. It had some minor issues but I just got around to hunting down a bothersome hum issue. I resoldered the ground, cleaned and tightened all the contacts on the head shell, lubed and installed new RCA cables (the source of the bad hum). The dual sounds incredible. I loved my Techincs SL1650 but the Dual sounds so much.... MORE. That's the best I can describe it.
 
Yeah, yeah... I just spent two hours cleaning and lubing this puppy, with absolutely no change.

Won't stop spinning. Arm returns about 1/2" right of where it should. Arm won't lower without being pushed. Arm won't go all the way to center of LP, stops (and acts like a broken record) about 1/4" from lead out grooves. No sound from right channel. Changed RCA cables, no change. Contact on red lead on the carrier isn't attached, so probably isn't making contact, probably causing the right channel issue.

Late, off to bed. May work on this again tomorrow, may just give up and put it on BT. I really, really like fully manual decks, such as my nice, heavy, direct drive JVC QL-A75...
 
I don't know if you did this or not but, did you lock the arm and run it through an automatic reset cycle? This was the problem with mine, it gets all wonky riding in a car or being moved and need to be run through with the arm locked to reset all the mechanisms.

I found my 1019 for $29.99 at Goodwill this past summer. It only required some minor cleaning/relubing in order to work perfectly, thank gawd. I initially only wanted it for spinning 78s, but I'm using it more and more for microgroove use too - I even bought a spare headshell on eBay and am waiting to receive a Shure M91ED to use with it.

Don't give up on the 1019 yet! It has a very unique, powerful, dynamic, full-throated sound that you won't get elsewhere. Drums sound like DRUMS on a 1019, if you know what I mean.
