Dual 1019

It's not stereopimple, it's steuerpimpel which is a german word.

And it's the little plastic sleeve at the bottom of the rod that lifts the tonearm while cueing or automatic operation.

It rides on the lever that does the lifting and the lever follows the groove in the big clear plastic cam.

It acts as a kind of clutch, letting the rod slide on the lever if the arm is impeded in any way.

It eventually deteriorates and the the arm motion can be affected because the contact between the lever and rod is unreliable.

OK, after a bit of scrubbing, I'm beginning to see the attraction. Wouldn't look bad at all next to my $99 McIntosh MAC-1700 and my $10 AR-2a's. :scratch2: If I only had somewhere to put a nice vintage system...

I've been working on turntables for 40 years and I can attest to this: Be very very VERY careful with WD-40 around a vintage Dual table. That stuff is a better solvent than a lubricant and it can cause significant problems. It can dissolve lubricants and leave a gummy mess that attracts dirt. I've not used it but have had to repair tables which had WD-40 used on them.

IIRC, there is a service manual for the 1019 on the vinylengine website.

I have this same setup. Its a really nice table. I have 4 Duals. Though I would not mind having your JVC! Nice job. If you decide to part with the MAC let me know.

Recommended Cartridge?

I talked to a Dual expert yesterday, who informed me that my Shure V15 Type III is too compliant for this TT, the cueing is too fast and will damage it. He told me that my lowly plasticy Dual 502 belt drive will work fine with the Shure, and will actually out-perform the 1019. :yikes:

So, which (33-1/3 | 45 rpm) cartridge would you 1019 users recommend for this vintage piece of fine German craftsmanship? Keep in mind that I paid $4 for it, so esoteric (read expensive) carts ain't gonna happen...
 
I have a Dual 1009SK and love it! Just have to get around to lubing the motor. :sigh: Mine came with a Stanton 500 (gold body) and it sounded good with it. I've also read that Ortofon carts are excellent matches for these TTs. :yes:
 
I've heard that shipments from that guy are pretty fast, actually. I'd probably stick with domestic dealers though - it's not a large price difference.
 
When the cueing is working correctly on the 1019, the descent is very slow and gentle.

The descent in automatic is pretty fast but you can manually cue the arm before the automatic function is initiated and the descent will then be the same as manually cueing it down.

Yes, my Dual 1019 is also SLOOOOWWWW in descent, much slower than my Technics SL 1650.
 
3 cartridge recommendations for your 1019. All three of which lend complimentary strengths and are a good match for the heavy Dual arm. Shure M44, Denon DL-110, and Stanton 500.
 
:scratch2: I have a Red Ed on the Dual 502, maybe I'll try that on the 1019, and put the Shure on the 502... The cartridge carrier needs some attention first, found a procedure here for gluing the contacts back on, and soldering the leads to fix the oxidation and prevent noise.

Gonna be fun to dial this in with a protractor, given that the screws can't be tightened while the cart is on the arm...
 
Here's another interesting fact concerning 1019s.

In the 1960s, Dual developed a device called a "Skate-O-Meter" which was meant to be installed into the cartridge carrier in place of a cartridge.

It had a stylus on it that rode in the grooves and measured skating force which told you if you had the anti-skating force adjusted correctly.

This is relevant to the 1019 because Dual first developed the device for use with the 1019.

I have a Shure M91ED with Jico SAS on my AR-XA, and I like it so much I just bought a second M91ED for my 1019, and the two tables are sharing the same stylus. As great as the AR-XA is, I think I just may prefer the sound of the 1019! I like the way individual instruments seem to pop out of the speakers on the 1019.

And an added bonus is, with the 1019 I don't have to worry about falling asleep while listening to records. :)
 
Another easy cheap upgrade for a 1019, especially one with a United Audio base (mine is the earlier style that tapers to the bottom and has no racing stripe), is to dampen the base with Mortite rope caulk, which has a clay-like consistency. Half of a $5 package's worth will cover the inside of the base, and since doing it I've noticed tighter bass response and perhaps some treble extension from my 1019.
