Dual 1218 and 1228 Plinth - Interchangeable?

I have a 1218 plinth and was wondering if I buy a 1228 turntable will it fit without modification into the 1218 plinth?

It works. I made that very swap. Reason being the 1218 plinth was made by Dual[much better looking] and the 1228 by United Audio. Seems I had to make a slight modification. Can`t remember now...,but it does work.

Sorry guys, the 1228 will NOT drop into the 1218 plinth.
While they have the exact same "footprint" there is a problem - it's the strobe assembly. It will hit the masonite insert on the lower right. You need to remove about 1/4" of the masonite deck from the right side of the transport screw extension to the right side end of the cutout - then you'll be fine.

Been there - done that.

Kinda along the lines of something I've been wondering myself. Will a 1229 fit into a 1219 base? Also, can someone explain the where/why/when time line of the dual branded plinths and united audio branded plinths? Is one better, rare or more desireable than the other?

I think the United Audio plinths was for Duals sold here in the US by United Audio. They seem to be cheaper made/looking than the ones that say Dual which I think are the ones sold in Germany. I could be wrong.

1219/1229/1229Q bases are the same. Early 1219 bases used a black inlay for the stripe in the front, later 1219's and 1229's used a black painted stripe, and they did away with the stripe altogether on the 1229Q bases. Some late 1229Q bases did have a 1/8" masonite bottom.

If the base says United Audio, it was made in the US for US sales, Noresco was the nameplate and distributor in Canada (and the bases were built better there), and Dual branded bases came from the Dual factory for the remaining areas. They were the best built, except for the hinky height adjustable base on the 1229.

Probably more than anyone wants to know.....

In the 1960's through around 1981, Dual was imported to the USA by United Audio Products. Duals sold in the USA had UA made bases and dust covers. Duals sold in Europe had Dual bases. After United Audio suddenly vanished from the scene, Adcom and Ortofon imported Duals for US sale.

I am using an brushed aluminum base that came with a beat up 1228 that I am using for a record cleaning machine..home brew of course. They made them for the 1218 as well. Kinda cool really!!...Dave

One good thing was that all the "standard-size" bases for all the idler-driven Duals from the 1009 to the end of the 12xx series used the same dust cover, the Dual CH-5 and as well, that fancy one with the section at the front that flipped up, was that the CH-25?

At least plinth is simpler than the original plinthos. How would you like saying that you had to construct a new plinthos for your TT?

The 1229 that I have has a metal silver band across the front of plinth with Dual label on the left side, so it must be the euro version. The CH-5 dust cover also says Dual on the top. The informative comments in this thread are starting to add up and make a little sense now. I got this unit from a guy who purchased it new while in the service and brought it home with him. I mostly see the United Audio versions 99% of the time in my travels.

Canada - yes - US - no. Smaller chassis Duals has smaller dust covers in the US. For Noresco, it was one size fits all.
