Dual 622

I am about to purchase this Dual 622 TT for $150. It seems to be in pretty good shape and condition. All I know about the 622 model is the tone arm is well balanced. Any tips you can share in regards with Dual 622?

Thanx a lot. I just want to make sure that this is a good buy. I do have a music hall usb1 TT with a AT-VN95EN cartridge and is sounds pretty good. I hope this Dual 622 is a total upgrade.

Yes, that's a good price for a good turntable! Just make sure everything works ok and speed is stable before paying. Being a 45 or so years old direct drive with ageing electronic components this is important to check.
If speed is off it can be an easy fix like cleaning some potentiometers. ...or something much harder/experiensive.

Place a

Install a VM540ML cartridge on the Dual and never look back. The original Dual cartridge has a 10Hz compliance of 25, the VM540ML compliance of 23 would be perfect. Technically you are getting the high quality TT cheap enough you can afford the $279 VM540ML.

The Dual is a huge upgrade from your Music Hall. Sell the Music Hall for $150 to partly finance the VM540ML. To get an idea of what to expect sound wise what is your amp and speakers? The Music Hall has built-in phono amp, does your amp have a phono amp?

I have a Marantz PM300 integrated amp. Its not that pricey but I get a decent sound.

622 only takes a ULM Cartridge unless it’s coming with the optional 1/2” adapter and additional counterweight. Aftermarket options are available to accommodate a half inch, but have to spend around a hundo and be willing to accept shipping from Eastern Europe. Btw it’s a solid performer, just make sure it functions as advertised.

I thought with the slotted holes in Dual head shell with spacer would work with VM540ML. The Dual 622 tonearm I read only works with cartridges to 6.5 grams unless counterweight is added. The VM540ML is 6.4 grams so use a light weight wood spacer.

I’m not at home right now, but if I’m not mistaken the headshell is single screw. The arm is light, after buying an adapter and mounting a light Shure I had to have the counterweight so far back the dust cover would close. There’s a guy in Poland that sells a 20g brass counter addition that’ll screw onto to tonearm. I’ll confirm when I get home.

Look again. They both have metal inserts. The Best Audio one shows a screw in some of the pics so maybe that confused you.

Not sure about Pat's now though they used to 3D print Dual sleds (I don't think they do now). Best uses injection molding. In my experience the injection molding is superior to 3D.

So I finally got the TT I tested it and it sound ok. Does anybody know what kind of a cartridge is this? (Please refer to the photos). I cannot figure how to take it off the arm. Please advice thank you.

Thank you very much. I will have to read and learn more on Dual TT. It seems a little different when it comes to the tone arm calibration and cartridge replacement.

The Dual should sound better than your original TT unless your speakers are lacking.

The Dual TT has a hissing sound. My other TT sounds a lot better to be honest. Maybe its time to change the stylus on my Dual. I was thinking of OM10. Now I am not familiar with the ULM cartridge. Do I realign them like the AT cartridges? Do I calibrate the tone arm?

That's an original Dual ULM cartridge, made for Dual by Ortofon. If you'd use a little mirror, you could probably see the exact type at the bottom of the generator capsule - but most likely it'll still be the stock ULM55E.

You may refer to the user manual of the 626 for that purpose - see for example there on Lulabu's archive: https://www.hifi-archiv.info/Dual/626/ The 626 is pretty much the same thing as the 622, just with the start/stop lever replaced by front buttons and with an additional lift button.
