low output level-Sanyo TP 625

my sanyo TT output level seems to be low compared to my Dual 622. I just bought a Grado prestige (black) cartridge & stylus in the hopes of fixing the problem, but, it did not help. Any suggestions?

My Dual stylus is a DN155e by Ortofon

Hmm. I can't seem to locate the specs for a DN155e online.

Do you have both turntables hooked up to one receiver? Or in different systems?

It could be that the Ortofon has a higher output than your old cartridge or your Grado. It could be that the phono input that you are using for the Dual (if not the very same input as your other table) has a different load factor. It could be a combination of these.

The Grado has an output of 4MV. I can't find any specs on the Ortofon either, but, do you think it would be much higher than 4MV? The Sanyo has the original RCA cables, do you think replacing these would help? I am trying both TT's on the same amp & phono input.

Try both carts on the same tt.

The Dual is a great TT, but I do hear a little noise from the direct drive. I would like to try the belt drive, but, the low output is discouraging

It might be. 1 mV is a big difference. Could be 5 mV. In another thread, someone mentioned that the load capacitance favorability from one cartridge to the other could push things over the edge, based on what the receiver's phono preamp defaults to.

It's kind of part of the territory with turntables, unless you get a higher end outboard phono preamp with variable gain.

In the old days when we had a low output cartridge, we'd run the signal thru a cassette deck on pause in record mode and listen thru the tape monitor...and watch the big meters bounce! LOL.

The Dual has a different headshell for the cart & stylus. NOT P or 1/2" mount

That is the stylus designation. The cartridge is the Ortofon TKS55E. Lots of these were distributed on the Dual turntables with ULM tonearms. If memory serves, they had a decent output of about 4mv.

So, if it has an output of 4mv (same as my Grado), shouldn't the volume levels be close?
