Dual or Technics?

I just recently picked up a Dual 1228 from GW and was wondering if I am making an improvement over my current TT. I know all is subjective, but would the Dual do a better job then my current Technic SL-D20?

Not really an improvement, more like a complement. Although the 1228 is no slouch - and imo a very cute looking model.

Two completely different turntables. The SL-D20 is a direct drive, and the 1228 is an idler drive. Try both and see which one appeals to you.

I own a 1228 and it works really well. The only thing I do not like, which is silly really, is the fully automatic function of it. Which in turn means more parts to potentailly break. I had to repair the little plastic piece that allows the arm to travel to play position. I forget the name of it (something in German) but a small piece of coax inner insulation was a good replacement and it has worked fine ever since. I think it was a common problem on these eras of Dual TTs. So if your tonearm ever fails to automatically travel to record, chime back in to AK. Not sure if the Technics has a standard mount or Pmount (google image shows both kinds of arms), so that could possibly limit your cart choices. I have my Dual and Pioneer both hooked up and use them both. Its nice having a vintage receiver with more than 1 phono input

If the Dual is working properly, it might be the better of the two, but there are lots of things that can fail due to age. Technics tables tend to be very rugged.

Its a P mount with an AudioTechnica DR750

Technics have really grown on me.... they sound fantastic!! I know the cartridge plays a big part in that though !! My Technics are SL 1200,1600,3300, my Dual's1229Q ShureV15-III, My Favorite....,1019,1249,.... they are all nice!!!:thmbsp:

I own three "bohhey" Duals and love them. A great turntable but need to be in proper working order.

If you want to use the quietest turntable, then the technics is your best choice because it is direct drive. I used to have a Dual like yours but the rim drive /idle wheel drive noise was picked up by the stylus. Technics direct drive models don't have this problem. They are completely silent.
