Depends.
If the pictures are on another site usually you can just copy the link to the picture and paste it into the post using the little picture icon that puts IMG tags around it.
Otherwise, you can save it to your photo album here, then copy and paste the picture link same as above.
Or, you can attach the image to the post, click the thumbnail, when it opens in a new window copy that link. Then, as above, post it into the thread using the picture icon.

Yes. Please, please, in the name of whatever is Holy...make sure your picture is no more than 800px. in width. (linked or uploaded) Otherwise it will bork the thread--especially so for phone and tablet users. Thanks you.

If one wants to upload one's photos to AK -- there's a little trick I like to use.
First, go ahead & upload the photo via the "advanced" forum form
for posting. When one does, the little spawned dialog window used to upload photos will show a hyperlink to one's photo. Right click on that hyperlink and choose "copy link address".
Next, past the address into the text of one's post, and enclose it in "IMG" tags. Alternatively, one can use the little "insert image" icon above the box into which text is typed to insert the image.
This is the result of those efforts:
