I'm still pissed at the guy who was working behind the counter at Main Street Records in Northampton, MA in 1984 who told me Brewing Up with Billy Bragg was "The Sgt Peppers of the 80's" as he convinced me to buy the cassette. I couldn't afford more than one or two music purchases a month at the time. I never liked the cassette. (The Saturday Boy was getting a lot of airplay on WRSI at the time, which is what drew me to it.

I never liked Billy Bragg either, but I doubt even his biggest fans would would say his work was "the Sgt. Peppers of the 80's". I think his fans might consider him to be "the new Woody Guthrie", or something like that.
Anyway, yes that was a dumb thing to say.

It irks me so much because the guy was kind of insistent about it. In that stereotypical, opinionated, poorly socialized way some record store clerks can be.
(I should be clear I'm making light of the situation here. It doesn't actually keep me up at night. It's not like there isn't a world of more important things to be concerned with today. It's actually pretty funny that the interaction has stuck with me for 36+ years.)
 
A salesman at a high-end audio store, which had some very nice tube amps, proceeded to talk down all of them, except for the MC275 which he said was ‘ok’. The same salesman tried to convince me that 90s speakers only sound good with 90s misic:biggrin:
 
Hmmmm.... Geoff at Machina Dynamics is a gold mine of stupid that's tough to beat. There was a guy making electronics called "H-CAT" who claimed his amps "cloned the actual recording space" and could reproduce it perfectly. And he also claimed he'd invented a 4th mode of operation for transistors. He might have been my favorite.

That’s a pretty good one. Your car will also make it through a chain link fence. The end result in both cases might be less than satisfactory.
 
Sixth grade, I fell in with a small group of otherwise good boys, led by this sanctimonious, vainglorious son of a local lawyer, Ian.

Ian had two SMOKING hot sisters, and his own standup video game (forget what it was) a basketball goal, etc. So, we hung out there.

He shows me this silly little junk tape deck. Tells me he knows a guy who, get ready for this, "swapped out some components, and so now, it has 80 watts per channel."

I told him he was full of it. I was right.
 
When I lived in a real small town there wasn't really too many people into audio, there was one guy though who was and we would talk audio from time to time. The first time we talked he told me how Akai Equipment was absolutely miles ahead in technology than any other brand and to this day some of their tech from the 70's is still better than lots of modern equipment.

So I figured ok the guy really likes Akai stuff, seems harmless. Then a few talks later he tells me he invented compact discs, delusional red flag goes up, I said thanks for that I really like the format. After that I kept our audio talks real short whenever I ran into him, don't need any extra crazy in my life.
 
Anyone who brings up the Richard Clark Amplifier Challenge as "scientific" usually has me walking backwards through the hedge. Likewise anyone who tells me that all formats are mastered exactly the same, so therefore the most technologically advanced format is always the best representation.

Also, telling me you are "an engineer" doesn't automatically qualify everything you say concerning every possible subject. Nor does being a salesman in an audio store at some point.
