E-V Patrician 800 speakers

Bingo! Craftsman bungalow it is.
Spent a week riding my bicycles around Memphis and that is a bungalow hotspot for sure.
The walls are covered with pictures of long dead relatives. :yes:
Cardboard is under the piano legs at present - I didn't want to score the floor. The piano will be moved to the wall in the far right of the picture soon and I'll get proper casters for it then. At present the direct sun hits it in the morning for a few hours, NOT GOOD for the soundboard.
The piano is the next restore project, completely cleaning/readjusting the action, replacing the hammers and shanks, and installing new keytops.

Yep, I would like to upgrade the mono blocks at some point, I would like to get a little more power to power them with. I currently have eico hf-35 and would like to try hf-60's. Since yours are 8ohm, you can get more power to them, mine are 16ohm. I would also like to get back into them and replace some more resistors....projects projects and more projects
Are you going to restore the Altec gear? I think you would enjoy those :yes:
OH BOY. You sure do like big projects, wish you were local...I could drop off a few more to keep you busy

Certainly protect that beautiful floor - but the pier and beam construction can leave a lot to be desired, if it hasn't been reenforced over the years. Supporting a heavy stationary object like that piano can create a sag.

I'll take my $10 E-V Cristal thrift store find and go back into my own version of man-cave... I couldn't imagine how wonderful yours sound when I enjoy my little fellas as much as I do!

Well, I'm going to keep them. The Klipschorns will go to some lucky new home in November, but first they will hang out with my son in his apartment for a few months.
I'm thinking of putting together a 'listening' weekend ...

I'll be 'batching' it and can have lots of speakers in the house.
I'll have my Klipschorns, Cornwalls, Patricians and Tannoy SGM 10s. Scott 299B and 355/208 combo, and possibly the Altecs will be up and running by that point. Not sure.
Of course, if you wish to bring some of your speakers/amps/turntables/etc. you would be welcome.
any interest? Bowling Green KY is a pretty cool vacation spot if you want other things to do. Corvette Museum, Mammoth Cave, great local eating places.

Been stripping wallpaper in prep for painting, and in the process moved the Patricians to either side of the fireplace. JJBlue... again.. you are correct. These speakers work MUCH better with a closer placement. The Khorns are strictly tied to corners unless you wish to construct false corners, which I DON'T, but the Patricians allow wiggle room within the confines of the corner.
After painting (this weekend?) I'll be bringing the Khorns in and putting them in the opposite corners for some A/B comparisons before selling them. Yeah, I love me some horn loaded bass, but the way I see it, if I ever HAVE to have another pair of khorns, it'll be easier to sell the Patricians and get Khorns than to sell Khorns and find another pair of Patricians at a price I can afford. :scratch2:

Never was the greatest fan of horns myself, but those Klipsch things you have certainly go for a few thousand whenever I come across them, they really that good? Wish you were local too mate, be nice to pop over and play with the equipment. But you still need a decent TV over that fireplace mate, lol. Anyway, those side-by-side jobs you have are interesting and rare, hold onto em or I'll do something to you Greg wouldn't like me doing, lol. Seriously though, with how rare they are and the work you put into them, as you said, you could easily get Klipsch horns any day.
Klipschorns, with the proper placement (most important) and the right equipment (tubes, or high quality solid state), are amazing speakers.
Honestly, the Khorns with the ALK crossover are a better sound (to these old ears) than the Patricians, but that's like saying the Corvette is better than the Viper... both are exceedingly fine.
Once you've experienced the horn loaded bass response Klipschorns provide it becomes, I think, the standard by which you judge all other bass response.
The Patricians are WAY easier to place and have sound good. Khorns are fussy, but when the conditions are correct... WOWZA.

Ha... the one TV we do have, a 27" Sanyo, only gets three channels. when I'm in the living room, I'm either making music or listening to music. There's usually wine involved too.

Heres my theory on why you're not getting the bass response to match the khorns. Granted they are both different species and will have different sounds.
I believe that the 800 is more power hungry then the 700. The 700 is the 16ohm version and the 800 is the 8ohm version. My theory is that the 700 is built for tube gear, while as the 800 is built for solid state. Thus would make a more power hungry speaker.
When I went from my 35watt eico hf-35's to 75watt mcintosh, it was night and day. The bass response completely changed.
Another theory, which I PM'd you about awhile ago. Is the binding post on the crossover board. These corroded really bad internally, I rebuilt my xovers again and replaced all the oem binding post with banana posts. That change, was amazing. I had what I thought was a rubbing VC on the 30W but once the posts were changed, the woofer came back to life.
With Khorns, they are very very efficient. I believe 10watts can get them to play with in spec.
You may be lucky, since your 800's came from a university. Chances are they were used regularly. My 700's sat for soooo long that every month brings a new adventure. I just had a T350 go all raspy.

That sounds perfect, then you can see if the bass changes. Which it should, just no turning it full blast and listening to Black Sabbath

Love the Patricians... I love all the big speakers from the "Golden Age"... One thing though, I noticed a yellow dot in at least two pictures. One was on the right Klipschorn and the other was on the right Patrician. Was this just something caused by your camera, or did you forget to take off all the GW/thrift price stickers?
