E-V Patrician 800 speakers

Just caught on to this thread as well. It is amazing enough with just the Patricians, but then add the other pieces and truly over the top. Congrats and thanks so much for sharing. Speaking of sharing, I know it takes more time, but given these are such wonderful speakers, if you could upload some of the before/after pics to AK, that would be great. If you have done searches and found threads from years ago, many used external links to pics like Photobucket and all that remain now are empty links. Once they are in AK, they are preserved for as long as AK is around.
 
Wood dog I have a pair off Georgians (smaller versions of the Pats you have). I'm pretty sure the woofers are supposed to be wired out of phase, if my memory serves me. Don't know why but I sure love the way mine sound.

I left them both as they were when they came out of the cabinet. It's easy enough to switch the phasing via the inputs on the back or the crossover panel.

Good news is... They're DONE. Well, almost done. Have to get a few screws to replace warped ones, but functionally, they are DONE. :banana:

Sat back and listened. Nice. Still have to move them into a bigger room and, importantly, corners. this has been a fun and highly satisfactory project. They are definitely not meant for near field listening, I don't think.

I'm waiting for some pics to load up and then I'll post a link.

Hi Forrest, there is not an "area", per se, you would use the "Advanced" option when you create your post which looks like you have done it once before by looking at the quoted pic in the above post.

After clicking "Advanced", you will see a "Manage Attachments" button that allows you to add pics. They are then loaded into that particular post and reside on the AK servers forever. You can also go back and edit each of your prior posts to add pics in case you want to keep the timeline intact.

Room size isn't really a big concern with these speakers. People assume that if you have huge speakers you'll need a concert hall to use them. People see my speakers(patrician 700) and always assume they are PA speakers. People are always use to bose cubes and other tiny speakers. They don't realize what they use to be.

My living room is the size of a postage stamp..but I think this helps the sound. There is no dead spots. Of course I maybe losing a little hearing but its fantastic to be in the music :D
 
So how many amps a box are needed for these things? Looks like a tri-amp configuration there, or at the very least a bi-amp configuration.

You can configure it any way you wish. Currently I'm running it straight ahead stereo, one input per speaker.

(the below is from an email to a friend of mine who's been in the loop for a while. ... just didn't want to type out the entire thoughts... it's a beautiful day and I want to go outside!) :yes:

After getting them into the house yesterday and hooking them up to my H.H. Scott 355/208 combo, what a anti-climax. They seemed anemic, and while the bass was clearly 'there', things were muddy and not well defined.

Put the amp into mono mode and couldn't locate the 'invisible' center speaker, so figured I had wired them incorrectly. No time to fix them last night but I was SO disappointed.

Got back into both boxes today to check against the schematic JJBlue64 posted.

Get this. The tweeters and the squawker were both wired red to red (pos) and black to black (neg).

The schematic called for everything EXCEPT the 12" woofer to be wired Black to Red (pos) and Red to black (neg)

I had marked EVERYTHING as it came out of those boxes, so there's something of a mystery going on. I think it may explain the use of finishing nails on the front of the box.

Here's my theory, they didn't sound 'right' , but certainly better than your average stereo, so somebody at some point tried to go inside, and stripped the screws off the front molding because that is the WRONG way to get inside, even though it would appear 'easier'. When they realized the effort involved, plus the fact that they were positioned a few feet off the ground to begin with, they probably said 'screw it'.

Now ... with the speakers wired correctly, I could find the invisible center speaker with the source on mono, and the sound???

OH MY... really good. Khorn slayer? No, but every bit a kissing cousin.
I still like the authority and muscularity of the horn loaded bass, but the Patricians deliver. Of that there is NO doubt.

The supreme test for me is how they sound at low volume. Delicious. full, sweet and clear.

They are not as efficient as the Khorns, so it takes more juice, but the 208 at ~30 watts a side (7591 tubes) is plenty loud if I want it, and really nice at low volume.

Here are the resistance values I measured from the drivers

Box one: measured at the terminals with crossovers in the chain and the speaker by itself (marked alone)
30W - 6.0 5.0 (alone)
LF (12") - 6.3 8.7 (alone)
HF (mid horn) 1.8 13.2 (alone)
VHF (350) .5 7.1 (alone)

Box two:

30W - 6.0 5.0 (alone)
LF (12") - 6.2 8.4 (alone)
HF (mid horn) 1.7 13.6 (alone)
VHF (350) .5 9.3 (alone)

hehe The same thing happened to me. I have no idea who wired these things up but they must have been color blind or it was an anti tamper thing. When I first got mine, I thought they were messed with so I switched all the wires around...Then I found the schematics and was ooops..

The Klipschorns are in the garage wondering 'what the hell just happened?' heh.

As far as having the speakers in the house, my partner Greg 'gets' me, plus I think he believes, as I do, that they make a nice addition to the room.

My son brought some of his dubstep music over, very cool genre and we let it crank. Oh my goodness. These are VERY choice.

Virgil Fox was next with Bach.

He listened to the Patricians and said, 'you're not getting rid of these anytime soon, I can tell'.

He knows me.

He also was making a pitch for having the Khorns at his apartment.

These are magnificent. Skynard, good ole grateful dead, AR Rahman (the music producer, not the noodles) - heard a fundamental low D that I had never heard before even though well hinted at by the Khorns. Powerful.

They project a soundstage such that you can move around and 'get the good' from many many spots.

They are as gentle as bunnies and can grab your attention faster than a positive pregnancy test.

I take these $ultra$ deluxe vintage speakers, sound-wise, leave others such as the Hartsfields, Paragons and Klipshorns in the dust?

I've never heard Paragons nor Hartsfields so I can't compare those, but I do have a love affair with Klipsch speakers, owning Heresys, Cornwalls, and the mighty Khorn.

And while talking about sound is like dancing about architecture, if I had to use a phrase, I would have to say the Patricians best the Klipschorns. Oh my ... did I just say that?

It's the same kind of statement as saying the pianist Argerich is better than Sokolov. Both are giants.

I knew they were going to be good, I just had no idea how good.

Those big EVs look right at home in your house. The piano is choice as a centerpiece. I could definitely get comfortable in the mission listening chair! Thanks for the invite to come and listen - I will see what transpires.

BTW, I really like that portrait on the wall - what is the story?
 
I have a very rare pair of Technics SBR 200 that need new foam surrounds. These are the flat honeycomb speakers and the cab is about 3" thinck. Any one know of some one who can refoam the babies for me
