E-V Patrician 800 speakers

LOL, no, it is a button that reads 'bullshi!t'. Paul Klipsch was famous for using this when extraordinary claims that defy physics were made about loudspeaker designs.

the phrase 'There is no replacement for displacement' is hard to fit on a button.

Thought maybe it was a 'turbo-boost' button... And yes, there is no replacement for displacement, as I've recently-found out. Man, I love big speakers...

I've just acquired a nice pair of Patrician 800 speakers. I have found a lot of information about them but I can't find anything about the wattage of the speaker? Does anybody know? I figured they were around 75 watts
 
If anyone would know, it seems that JJBlue would. JJ... you out there?

btw, JJ, I have been using my Harman Kardon PA2200 power amp (solid state - 100 watts per side) and you are correct ... the bass REALLY opened up.

I just read the entire thread and noticed that you are in KY. I'm in KY also. I actually have a quad of patrician 800s but I'm selling one pair and keeping a pair.

I doubt theyll take even that much input power. Maybe with peaks, but constant I wouldnt expect them to take more than 20 or 30W. Theyre insanely efficient.
 
Thanks Bob. I'm young and new to all of this HiFi stuff so all suggestions are appreciated. What would be the best amp (sound and wattage) to run a pair of these? I thought a couple of Allen 75 amps may work but it seems that may be too much wattage.

Having more power capability and staying away from any clipping distortion on peaks is better than too low power and possible damage to the mids and tweeters. You likely won't put more than a few Watts into those anyway as they don't require much, they are very efficient. 4 of them! Haven't seen that since about 1974 when a friend had 4 Patricians for quad!
 
Thanks guys for the help. I really just lucked up on these. I paid quite a bit for them but I'm selling a pair so I can hopefully clear the other pair.

With that kind of efficiency, a 20-25 watt tube amp is probably all you really need (or tubelike solid-state a' la Sansui, Sherwood, Sony, etc. from '69-'72). A little more power than you need is okay, but make sure you got the room for it, otherwise you'll barely be able to crack the volume before the volume gets out of control. I love the look of the various Patrician cabs EV made back then. Talk about big sound. Nothing like a pair of huge, tube-era speakers pumping out the tunes.

Im a SE (low power, single ended) guy, so many here know what my recommendation would be...something with 2A3s :yes:. In all honesty, the Allen 75s would be great, maybe possibly better, if thats your thing. I like the euphonic sound of SE tubes (or colored, as some will say) more so than the grunt of PP. Different strokes for different folks. My advice is to find people in your area with amps of different topologies and different tubes to get an idea of what you may like. Im sure there are plenty of members in your area who would happily assist you :cool:
 
I've got one pair on ebay right now and I am really hoping to keep the other pair and get the crossovers rebuilt. In the meantime I'm going to be deciding what kind of amps I want. I wish the Allen 75 was stereo because I have one and it would probably drive both speakers. Do you think the dynaco 70 is a good amp for these speakers? I may have access to one of them.

Take the proceeds from your Patrician sale, acquire another Allen 75, and have them both gone through. Youll have a pair of great sounding amps, and plenty of cash left over :yes:. Being that the Allens are mono, youd need 2 for stereo operation.

Edit: BTW, beautiful speakers, I had to take a look at the auction ;)
 
Thanks, they are beautiful. I'm keeping the pair that don't have consecutive serial numbers. I figure they all sound the same so I might as well sell the pair that I can get the most for. Thanks so much for your help. Like I said, I'm totally new to this. I now know why people really get addicted to this stuff. Nothing I have ever heard sounds like this and I haven't even heard them through a tube amplifier yet. I've been rebuilding hammonds and leslies for 16 years and have acquired many hammond amplifiers but I read on here that hammond amps were not good for hifi. I do have a couple of those baldwin amps that are 18 watts per channel but I would assume the Allen would blow them out of the water. Who would you suggest that could rebuild the Allen amps?
