EconoWaveguide Utility Large Advent Build Thread

Well, one's running in prototype. I reworked my LE14a crossovers to the Advent spec and have the driver leads sticking out of the L-pad shaft hole clipped to crossover on the bench. Playing through my bench Onkyo TX5000, it sounds really nice doing Sunday AM NPR classical and some Brubeck on CD. I liked those OLAs I recently sold here and if Bauhausler's 300B can drive his, my EL84 amps shoul be able to run these fine. That I can check out later today.

I did find a couple things out. First, my cab is a bit different as the woofer cutout is higher than on the others pictured here. It is a Utility cab, so perhaps that's the difference. At any rate, I can keep the horn high and close to the woofer.. The second issue is that Masonite woofers won't fit into non Masonite cutouts, which makes sense if you think about it as the Masonite basket is bigger near the edge. The perimeters and footprints match, but the newer woofers curve in faster.

The plan from here on out is to order the handful of correct parts from PE to clean up the crossover when I build them properly, and to redo the grilles so the cutouts match the horn opening and the Velcros to keep it on.

I don't know if these guys will knock off the A7s down here, but they do sound great and may bump the Ohm Hs out of the garage and into a home where the can be enjoyed daily

The second one is completed and I'm playing both in stereo with the Almarro amp; sound VERY nice. I've got the Almarro dialed up a bit higher, but they sound sweet with plenty of bass. They certainly are the strongest contenders for knocking the A7s off the first team, but they don't seem to have the soundstage, you are their fullness and presence the Altecs have. Then again, I'm finding out a lot of speakers don't.

I'll eventually redo the first crossover to something on a board, which really was the hardest part so far, and finish up the speaker connections and grills, but I'm going to play them here for a while and get some long term feeling for them.

They may not displace the Altecs, but I'm pretty sure there's a place her for them long term.

How does the low end compare to the bozowaves?

Bozowaves??? The Bozaks that didn't work out?? It seems better and more fuller too, as it was pointed out that the B199s probably were ask to do too much crossed as high as I had them; 400 hz seems to be the best for them. Advents have a nice bottom and I could certainly live with this bass, but my cabs used the foam rubber so I'm not sure how well it matches Bauhausler's batting. The mids though aren't grabbing me as much as the Altecs do tonight; fewer of those take pause moments.

FWIW, I didn't seal the cab with plumber's putty this time as the woofers use a gasket instead; that must be a Masonite version requirement. I also used my SawZall with a 6" metal blade to make the cuts. It worked great as the longer, stiffer blade cut much better than the igsaw , especially close to the sides where I had enough blade that I didn't have to deal with the shoe running into the edge. The metal blade worked fine too as it actually had about as many TPI as the jigsaw wood blade. The wood blades were far too coarse and probably would gave mucked up the face; the metal blade cut nice and clean.

Here's a pic of the second one in front of the A7, 1/8th the size and maybe 85% of the sound....

Finished up #2 yesterday and it is now complete; #1 still needs the terminals addressed. I pulled some 5 ways off some cups I had laying around and was able to bolt them right in as replacements for the stock Advent knurled connections, so I'm leaving the old plate with the disconnected toggle switch in place.

Been listening to them for the last few days and am finding them quite enjoyable; they certainly are giving the A7s a run for their money. The horn top end is very similar with its dynamics and suppleness and the bass probably betters the A7s. That being said, the A7s paint a bigger soundstage (well they are much bigger and taller) but the Advents are certainly very enjoyable to listen to. I've got them on 8" boxes set on my leveling pads, so that's a 10" rise. The horn drivers are 32" off the ground compared to the 49" for the A7s, so the soundstage seems a bit lowered there; the a7s give a full room wall of sound, the Advents sound like its about 2' lower.

I'm listening to some church organ music right now on the radio and it's very nice; the Advent woofer does a good job with the lows, the mids are sweet and the horns ad the edge and airiness to give the "live" sound I prefer. :dunno:

Theses ARE keepers. They may not kick the A7s to the curb, but I certainly can happily live with them should I ever move the A7s. I may hog out the case to flush mount the horns and enable the grills as the horn flange eats up all the motorboard upstairs, but that aside, these are done.

I'm going to post these up back in the Ewave thread, as I highly recommend this project to anyone looking to test the Ewave waters. I always found the Advents to be an enjoyable speaker to listen too and very non fatiguing, this modification only enhances those feelings, which may become stronger as the mylar drivers and surrounds break in.

If you have a set of Advents and want to take them to the next level, I highly recommend you consider this path.

Mylar? Which CD are are you using? B&C DE250?

Is that a Paradigm Atom in the lower left of the picture?

I have two pairs of utility cabinet Advents, one OLA and one NLA. The OLA pair has the woofers closer to the bottom of the cabinet, the NLA pair has the woofers in the same position as in your picture. Perhaps that is the difference.

Is this still considered to be the "best" crossover for the Large Advent Econowave?
Have any LA alternatives been suggested?

I have been wondering which version to use should I ever get around to ewaving one set of my advents. Holding back because: 1) I've never heard ewaved Advents. 2) After reading some of your posts I'm wondering if you might be working on an alternative modification. 3) No idea how much would be gained by the mods compared to your BSC.
I don't have the knowledge or tools to do anything more than a crap shoot on my own.

I am about to plunge into this Econowave project and have a question. On the Zilch crossover, the woofer looks to be 8 ohms. When I measure my OLA stamped metal frame 10" woofer, it measures 4.8 ohms. Are the 1.5mH and 12uf components correct for this impedance? Using an online crossover calculator, those values are correct for an 8 ohm load at 1200Hz. I need to order my components, but want to make sure prior to ordering. Thanks!

Nominal impedance will almost always differ from what you can read on a multimeter.

Impedance at the crossover frequency is better for computing component values than nominal.
If one opens up a commercially made speaker the values will seldom (never?) match what one gets off one of the online crossover calculators.

I believe one of Zilch's posts says the 1.5mH and 12uF low pass filter is generic and can((should?) be modified for the particular woofer used.
I've included the schematic for a crossover that uses different values and actually lists the drivers for it.
I would love to have others chime in on this.

Thank you Guido. I also have a pair of Advent Legacy's that will get "Ewaved", and their impedance measures over 6 ohms, so I would surmise that those values should not be the same as the OLA's. Just a bit confused, but want to make the right choice when ordering.

I have added a link to my last post which goes to a thread with some discussion of the two crossovers. As is said there, many have been very happy with the "generic" crossover for their Advent e-wave. As I have more projects than money, I put my Advent E-wave on the back burner. This decision was aided by the fact I've found no reviews, comments, etc. about the 3.5mH 10uF version which was the one I was leaning towards.
I'm sure you can find more digging through the main E-wave thread, but at over 800 pages the thing I get most out of it is lost.
