Burial - Untrue (CD, 2007, Hyperdub Records)

I'm really not an expert in electronic music, but this album got so many glowing reviews that I decided to check it out. At first I felt like it was monotonous, but then something clicked for me and I realized that it's not monotonous but rather a brilliant study in working with subtle variations on a theme. There is a very dark, introspective mood to this album. Tense, clattering beats shuffle along with murky low tones and haunting shreds of vocal samples, interspersed with ambient interludes. Recommended listening for late nights and rainy days - in fact I've even tried to listen to Untrue on a sunny day and ended up stopping because it just didn't work for me that way. Some people said this album was overrated; I say it's worth the hype.

Slowdive
Pygmalion
Creation
1995

what do you think of that? i either haven't heard it, or only heard it once - a long time ago. i love their first two.

Andy_H, i like burial, but don't listen to him that much for some reason.

he seems to have a lot of crossover appeal; when i worked at amoeba, somebody who was picking out the playstock asked me for an electronic cd and i gave this to him. he worked in the soul section, but said he liked it. (more than half of the ppl there don't like electronic music.)

I've got all three. Pygmalion is my favorite and the one I've listened to the most. It's their most lo-fi album in my opinion. I tend to associate it with Ride's Nowhere and Talk Talk's later masterpieces, and some of Low's work. It's rather ambient yet with well developed melody throughout. A great record to put on if you want to drift off for an afternoon nap. I was up earlier than I needed to be this morning and put it on while drifting back to sleep. Put's me under every time (a compliment).

Great stuff, guys!

Listened to a bunch of Blank & Jones remixes earlier, now:

The Orb ~ The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld

Something of an odd amalgamation containing elements of electronica, ambient and world music:

Eberhard Schoener - Bali Agung
Celestial Harmonies CEL 002 (1980)

More late night eerie stuff, a combination of western synthesizers, guitar and Balinese gamelan music. I not sure that I ever really listened to this after buying it. The assimilation of the gamelan idiom/sound world into a western frame of reference has been done repeatedly by composers over the past 90+ years, usually with more satisfying results musically. Having said that, this still is interesting listening.

I really dug the track Esther's on Amon Tobin's Foley Room album when it came out. Spacey, ambient, surreal. Really great track. I just found out the other day that there's a video for it. Some really incredible design and 3D work in this.

Thanks for the link :thmbsp:

You're right, good effects and a good track. I'll have to check out the album. I only have Permutation.

Edit: Just went to Amazon to listen to samples and noticed they have a free download of Shut Down

Sweet, thanks for the heads-up! Listening now. Actually that whole comp. album is free. Ninja Tune is generally quite good so I'm grabbing it.

Gotta love the Producer (well GLR in general) series. Haven't played LTJ in a while, and that was my first of the series. Might spin that later. Excellent choice on Tayla, too. :thmbsp:

Shuffling on random at the moment :music:

Yeah, I've been trying to "fill-up" my GLR collection the past few months. The Producer series seems a bit hard to find...as right now I'm searching for 02, 03 and 06 (not sure if there are more after 06...?) for a reasonable price, but not having much luck.

There's some really great stuff on these GLR!

Listening to these now-ish;
DMX Crew - A New Man
No More - Suicide Commando
Cursor Miner - Man Made Man
Sergej Auto - Musik, Ok!
Solvent - My Radio
Oppenheimer Analysis - Scorpions
Miss Kittin & The Hacker - Frank Sinatra
Solvent - For You
Solvent - Some Assembly Required
Adult - Hand To Phone
Bjorn Svin - Cannot Get Much Higher
