Electro-voice crossover question for EV-4

View attachment 2157875 View attachment 2157873 View attachment 2157874 Just picked up a pair. Absolutely stunning!

ordered some clarity caps to replace the capacitors. I might replace the resistors eventually.

questions:

1. Is the horn actually a midrange?

2. Anything else to do to the cabinets, maybe an extra brace?

looking forward to hearing them after recap...

1. Yes EV "MR-10" from memory (Not the best for a lot of power, The voice coils can be burnt out somewhat easily )

2. Make sure removable back is well sealed. Thin weather stripping falls apart easily.

Tweeter tends to go bad over time.

2 Level switches on back should be checked for oxidation along with connections to drivers terminals.

Loved mine for years, not the best at anything, but has a nice vintage sound, with decent deep bass, nice mids, and just okay treble.

I ran mine upright, on 3 foot "Legs" that a dining room table would use. Quite different than on the floor sound, and loved the mids in this position.

Reviving a dead thread on the EV Fours. This is a pair I picked up several years ago. They just never sounded quite right but being 55 years old, probably way past time for a recap. This is my first attempt at a recap - following advice from others who have done these. Sound is much improved. No muddyness anymore. All in all a very pleasant speaker - but do keep them on their sides, it does help. I know in some of these old threads most aren't that impressed with the Fours, but I am now - they do reveal a lot in a recording, aren't shrilly, the bass to me is solid and I don't notice that sense of distance they had before. They're not hard rock speakers for sure - no CVs here - but throw in some Stan Getz, Steely Dan or Dire Straits and they are very capable and enjoyable speakers. Would love to hear them with a proper tube amp but using my Yamaha AS-5000 amp, I'm happy. Prior to the recap, they only sounded decent with my Dual CV-40 amp - I'll dig that out and see if there's any improvement.

Afternoon HiFi,
About to recap my EV Fours, was curious which caps and resistors you went with. I looks like MJB3238 went with:

Dayton Audio Pmpc-4.0 4.0uf 250v Precision Audio C 027-226

Dayton Audio Pmpc-1.0 1.0uf 250v Precision Audio C 027-210 (two)

Dayton Audio Dnr-5.6 5.6 Ohm 10w Precision Audio Gra 004-5.6

Dayton Audio Pmpc-0.47 0.47uf 250v Precision Audio C 027-206

But he has one less resistor than our CO. Just curious if you have any tips.
thanks

Here is the crossover in my EV4's.
Different than what I have been seeing. Must be original.

Yup those Chicagos are what the factory shipped in a lot of different models (and inside the potted cans, too).

Starting to think these were not all built the same.

Maybe slight changes over the few years they were made. I could have sworn my pair had plywood front baffles, that were fairly dark in color.

But earlier in the thread, someone showed a baffle very light and MDF or particle board.

Ok, got to ask a question. I noticed on a lot of the crossover re builds that the caps seem non-polarized.
My old Chicago caps seem to be polarized. Does it matter with this circuit?

I recently rebuilt the crossovers in some EV-4s and replaced a tweeter. First, I'm very thankful for the community discussion here! Thanks mdye for the pdf Data sheet, most excellent.

When I got the EV-4s a previous speaker repair place had replaced the tweeter with a cheap midrange. I'm assuming they thought the tweeter was a midrange. I replaced with a ~5" EV paper cone tweeter I got from ebay. It's a sealed tweeter like the original, but not the same cone style. Part number 79172 719047. I could not find any info on this tweeter. I unplugged the woofer and midrange drivers in both speakers and listened to both tweeters in mono switched to high and the output was essentially the same. I couldn't tell a difference, so I was satisfied with this paper cone EV tweeter replacement.
The speakers sound really nice, I've been playing them for a couple weeks and this pair looks excellent.

Cleaning Mid and High Switches
Also, others have mentioned this, and I'm glad they did. When working on these, one should remove the tape protecting the switches and bathe and exercise them in Deoxit, I also followed up with CorrosionX. Don't think twice about this. I had read mediocre reviews of these speakers and this pair had almost no output on one midrange horn and diminished output on the other after recapping. The tweeters were also low output. The speaker just did not sound balanced. >>>After cleaning the two switches, the speakers came alive and the sound was balanced. This is a must do for these speakers!
