Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Yes, DB94...by default.:rflmao:
I had a movie scene here that really seemed to link my excitement with this band.

I would like to see this thread have some durability, and I don't know that the scene added to the health of the conversation.
You can't hurt the conversation by adding to it. Post whatever you like. I predict this thread will have durability. There's plenty of folks coming in already from all over AK as well as my friends from the "What Are You Listening To Right Now" thread.
But first, for my CPD, you need to fix the thread topic if possible. There's only one comma in Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and no "and"...it has to be the "&" symbol. :rflmao:Look at every album cover and official anything, and that's the way it's done.

BTW, I'm very impressed and happy to hear your story of finding ELP in 1993, far after their time had come and gone and the bulk of their fan base had forgotten them.
I came to know them as a sophomore in high school as well. In my case it was 1975, and it was Benny The Bouncer on Brain Salad Surgery that grabbed my attention of all things. The rest of the album shook my world after that.

Yep, and they were so different from one another. Sort of an object lesson for business partnerships: people often make the (natural) mistake of associating with others like themselves, but what you really need for success is complementary talents and skills. ELP had that.
I like that observation, Arch. They were very different people from one and other. At times it was their undoing because they approached it more as a business rather than a friendship. That can be a good thing, and it can be a bad thing. I'm not saying they were only in it for the money, because they weren't. They were trying to make the best music possible and to expand rock and roll beyond it's American Blues base and give it a more classically inclined, perhaps even sophisticated European flavor.

I was so fortunate to see them 3 times, once with the orchestra. I listen to ELP more often than any other band.
Never got to see them with the orchestra. They'd dropped the orchestra just before my first concert in July of '77. Saw them three times on that Works tour, two more times in '92 and '97, once as Emerson, Lake & Powell, and once as 3 with Robert Berry.
They never disappointed and always gave it their all.

Okay. This is the movie bit I deleted. I again apologize to ELP and Lynyrd Skynyrd. When the guitar hits in "still -- you turn me on" it has the impact of very few songs. MC5 "I Want you Right Now", and ....... Freebird.

This is the Kingsmen cellphone scene that I mentioned in my original post. I removed it based on the comic book level violence.

Great thread loved ELP!

I heard my first killer stereo system around 1970. I went to my brothers friends apartment (he always had the coolest stuff) and he just bought a gorgeous black faced Sansui rack system with a AU-999 amp with matching pre & tuner along with a Sui cassette & TT it was driving a pair of large ESS speakers. He put the self-titled ELP album on and it blew me away! I already loved the lp but hearing "Take a Pebble", "Knife Edge" and "Tank" on his system with Palmer's drum solo cranked up to no end was mind boggling. We used to use "Tank" to test our systems out thereafter lol. I saw them in concert in '74 on the Brain Salad Surgery tour such a fine show.

There have been a couple of Live albums of 3 released lately . The boot from Atlanta is better . :dunno:

I had no idea that this band touched/ influenced so many when I started this tread. The 1992-1998 area that I discovered ELP found music growing into an area of faceless electronic or boarderline explosive guitar music. I see the two as Jane's Addiction and Underworld. They were both influenced by ELP, but they were very different.

One was uncontrolled emotion. One was distorted emotion. That was the monumental influence.

LOL, now I understand the Kingman Cell Phone reference. I was totally lost on that one. Crazy movie sequence. Mucho Violento. Most be a Quintin Tarantino film.

Now I'm back to my new Mozart albums that I picked up today. Literally lifted the tonearm for this insanity! How do I go back to Mozart after that?

You will find that ELP's fan base is small, but furiously passionate and loyal. We celebrate and revel in the fact that we love and cherish something that few people understand or are even aware of.

BTW, I'm Frank. Delmarva is my home. Once again, thanks for starting this thread. It's getting a lot of hits as you can see. I've needed an outlet for my ELP passion ever since Greg Lake's old message board withered away in the wake of his death. Greg always had a VERY active message board. Keith and Carl never did. Somehow, the fans of ELP were always drawn toward Greg's official site above the others and the message board on his site. So what does that say about who was the most important member of the band?

I mentioned earlier that my copy of Brain Salad Surgery was the thinest record I have. Did anyone purchase the recent Record Store Day reissue of the same album?

Sometimes thicker albums are not better versions, but my copy has a fair few skips and hops.

I lived near a small amphitheater in Columbia, MD called Merriweather Post Pavilion.
The 2nd summer I attended concerts I got to see ELP during the Pictures at an Exhibition tour -
had to be 1971 I think ...I had the first 2 albums and the Nice Live album - so I knew the bombast,
but I wasn't prepared when Keith ripped the keyboard out of his console and went running up the aisle with it, playing madly all the while!
I'd never seen a keytar or any of that kind of thing - I was an old school synth fan -
Subotnick and Carlos and such ...moogs and patch panels ad nauseum!
... and Keith was English and wild and a bit crazed looking! It was GREAT!

Just did a comparison between three different ELP albums. on my wife's food scale..
My 1971 pressing of Tarkus, Cotillion SD 9900 was 128 grams.
My 1977 pressing of Brain Salad Surgery, Atlantic SD 19124 was 137 grams.
My 1977 pressing of Works Vol.1 Atlantic SD 2-7000 was 134 grams.

So BSS was actually the heaviest of the bunch. Your mileage may vary.
What's the catalog number on your copy? I remember seeing a streamlined version on store shelves in the early '80's that had a conventional album cover, i.e. no die-cut fold out. Is yours perhaps one of those?

Oh, and thanks for fixing the thread title.

Wow! I am very interested. Mine is SD19124/ Stereo

I do not have any other albums that can create the same sound as I shake them back an forth. Maybe I do, but I don't listen to those as often

With how much we have been talking about ELP, I actually took this album off of my turntable.
