EPI speakers

Nice speakers.
I sold off most of my EPIs but still enjoy my 400+'s.

Yours are low S/N. Probably have rubber surrounds and Masonite tweeters. Hopefully all original drivers.

Grilles are glued and nailed and can be a bear to remove. Re-install with velcro.

Change the caps to film. Glue the magnets as they tend to fall off. Gently run your finger around the edge of the inverted domes on the tweeters to loosen them up. They get stiff from lack of use and the output decreases.

EPI M400's. I have a pair that I refreshed and updated with drivers from Human Speakers. They sound great, are heavy, need feet under them so you can get to the speaker jack and not squish the speaker wire, and they need some power to get them sounding good (100watts or so really open them up).

I wouldn't rush to replace the speakers if they test good. The stock spring-loaded speaker terminals are not the best quality. The re-wire kit I bought from human has a new speaker cup with new banana jacks. But I'm sure you could replace them yourself. The human driver/wiring kit is not cheap and while they sound great, I probably wouldn't do it again due to cost.

EDIT - the driver location in the earlier M400's is low in the cabinet and I find it helps to tilt them back just a bit to get better directivity toward the listening position. But be aware they are narrow and heavy and if you have kids or pets, that might not be a great idea. In the newer 400+ models EPI moved the drivers up higher in the cabinet to address this.

The speakers work and sound good. They need a lot of power. The problem working on them is if they fell on you they would cause serious injuries.
