likety split

New Member
Greetings, im wondering can the original EPI tweeter be swapped in to replace one of the more modern EPI tweeters? I read here that the original was better construction. Thank you. pictures of the original attached (i hope).

Sure, but be prepared to lose about 3K of HF extension. My ears prefer the sound of "newer" red and gold ringed tweeters.

The earlier tweeters used a slightly bigger magnet structure. And a masonite mounting ring.

The later were of a slightly smaller magnet- maybe 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch smaller, tops. mounting rings were plastic with gold trim graphics, and I guess from Urizen's experience, red trim graphics as well.

I thought it was a 2K HF difference between the earlier and later, but I'm sure that 3k is possible.

I should clarify something here- I've had 2 or 3 pair of the black plastic and gold trimmed tweets here, and 6 pair of the masonite tweets, as well as 3 pair of cabs. The earlier tweets wouldn't fit in the newer cabs due to the larger magnet not fitting through the smaller routed hole. And the magnets were hardly noticeable in magnet size difference, making me think it was closer to 1/8".

now, that said, there could have been changes in the build at any time, and I can only go by my experience of juggling around a collection of them.
