BTW, with speakers like this, always pull a woofer and make sure no one subbed in Radio Shack drivers at some point....
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to speakers and hifi in general. Do I need to pull the woofer out of the cabinet to check the driver?

Yes, you pull the woofers and look at the them from the back. Hopefully you find something that looks like this:
This actually is a woofer out of an Genesis 2, but they used EPI woofers.
What you don't want is something like this:
BTW, EPI did use round magnets sometimes, which could make it harder....

This is not correct. Genesis did not use EPI woofers. Genesis made their own drivers, although they were all but identical. Genesis was in fact started by several people from EPI who left the company over the disagreement of the advancement of the tweeter.

My guess would be the design changes to the original inverted dome used on the earlier models.

Which tweeter? Well, there was only one. They were experimenting with the aluminum version of the original that Huw now sells. At least he was selling them. Genesis ended up putting a closer approximation of the EPI tweeter in their speakers. Interestingly enough Genesis, in the early 80s, was much more faithful to the original EPI line than EPI themselves were at that same time as they had begun moving more toward a basic, non descript, low performance, high profit line.
