ESS AMT-3 replacement woofer candidates

Well the problem here would be the 3 coil crossover the OP has in his AMT3's is designed for 2x 8 ohm woofers to run in parallel.
Using 4 ohm woofers would raise the crossover point to 500hz from 250hz.
Not to mentioned the undue stress you would put on your amplifier.

are you kidding ,,two 4 ohm woggers in SERIES is 8 ,,no amp stress, the Ess Woffer crossover you posted looks perfect...except make that shunt cap 200v or more.I respect that you are trying to stick to some ESS specks.. yes a 2 ohm load is rediculous

The point I was trying to make-you cant plug in a pair of 4 ohm woofers into a crossover that's designed for 8 ohm woofers, unless you run them in series, which reduces you output by 3 db.
Other wise your doubling the crossover point, which makes little sense.
The speaker will sound worse now, not better.
Regardless of how great the driver is, you would have to de-design the crossover to handle 2x4ohm woofers to use them

OK sir i new you new lol , just a quick story i once owned a pair 150 pound ESS speakers ,and the 1979 crossover was nowhere close to excellent.

Ok-the AMT3 crossover IMHO is adequate-or you can go electronic etc.
It all depends on what your looking for-not one thing fits all people-if that was true, we would all have the same equipment, listen to the same music, etc.
 
I have no knowledge of the electronic crossover "except i see others loving them on Different thread pages, also i didnt see that you purchased the woffers , and made it sealed . i like passive tryed and true ..ARE YOU DONE WITH THE BUILD

Well sir, I posted this information on another thread some time ago.
I have 2 pairs, one is done, one will be done when I get a chance.
That last pair has a modified crossover.
You will just have to search here.
The woofers I used where Eminence 1040SF-from the now out of business Orange County Speakers.
The person who started this thread is using different woofers.

I wish the Eminence 1040SF is still available. I am trying to make mine work with Dayton RS270P-8A woofers connected in parallel. On paper, they should work in the sealed cabinet whose Vb is afforded by the AMT-3. With these woofers, the simulations show that 112dB maximum SPL before Xmax is reached. This maybe wishful thinking but should be able to hit 106 or so...

I have the Eminence Alpha 6As installed in my cabinets, depending the outcome with the woofers, I might look into mid-range drivers with similar cone material to try to blend the various drivers into a seamless whole... so much to play with, so little time...

Its not easy to get a speaker to sound perfect...as we all know...those look like real woffers...you have to know that Four 2 inch coil 10s sealed up requires Very powerful amp right
 
Thanks for pointing that out. My SS amps can source 20-50As depending on make and model....I will not have a problem with power.
 
preserving a 40 year old classic FIBER GLASS ROSIN ..inside front back sides top to bottom corners and baffel AND MIX THIS PART THIN WITHOUT THE FIBER go around right where the subs lay in the box..obviously this makes a good bit better bass..good luck

Well I still see the are still 8 brand new Eminence 1040SF left...from speaker addict
 
One thing I forgot to mention is there are at least 2 midtube sizes-the Alpha ^A will not fit in the smaller midtube.
Frankly, as I have mentioned you better off using the stock midwoofer if you have it.
It's mated perfectly to the Great Heil, especially level wise, unless you want to raise the crossover points.
In it's stock configuration, it doesn't have to doo to much.
Which is a good thing IMHO.
Really the only issue most, if not all people bring up is the stock speaker can be light on the bass, for the reasons mentioned earlier.
You can change it all up, and have a different voicing, but IMHO you will loose the natural, easy, pitch perfect sound of the AMT3.
That's was the big reason I went back to the stock midwoofer.
Yes the Alpha 6A is a good driver, like the Peerless, Audax, Silver Flute, etc I tried in the past, but IMHO they interfered too much with the Great Heil.
 
Mojo I only have one of the mids and the cone is damage. There is a set available on eBay but the seller wants crazy money for the pair.

Yep I saw those.
Look in great shape.
He sells a lot of ESS stuff, and probably is aware it's the best way to go, again my opinion.
Nothing wrong with the Alpha, but as I mentioned there is difference, and one less thing to try to match.
So if you think of it in those terms, the price is relative.
