Essential John Mayall?

Can't believe no one has mentioned Back To The Roots. 2 LP's and Mick Tayler  :thmbsp:I saw him several times in the 70's and all everybody wanted to hear was Room To Move and it always pissed him off, a couple of times he refused to play it. Sugarcane Harris was great on fiddle.

While I haven’t heard it in a while, I have really good memories of Crusade. That was the album where I remember thinking that Mick Taylor was going to be the next blues god. His playing on that album truly stunned me—especially considering that he was still a teenager when the LP was recorded!!!—and it was no great surprise when, a couple of years later, the Stones recruited him to replace Brian Jones. I still think Mick is one of the VERY best guitarists on the planet, and I wish he got the praise and reputation he deserved, ‘cause he deserves a LOT.

Has anyone heard that album Too Hot for Snakes, on which Mick guests with roots-rocker Carla Olson and her band? Holy s*$it, what a show! They do a bunch of great tunes, but one of the standouts is a cover of the Stones’ “Silver Train” (on which Taylor played originally). His slide work, always an important part of his playing, is simply incredible.

The Turning Point
Blues Alone (you have to get this one for Broken Wings)
Jazz Blues Fusion
A Hard Road
Moving On
Empty Rooms (a continuation of the Turning Point acoustic esemble)
John Mayall's 70th Birthday Party CD (not the dvd)

Essential?...That would be a tough call for me, and I think I have around 30-40 of his releases. I tend to listen more to his later work, and really enjoy "Spinning Coin" and "Wake up Call". I have been a fan since the sixties and saw him live many times as a kid in England. His music was the reason I picked up a guitar.

Actually, another member just played that in the vinyl only thread, & I commented that it's one of my favorites. :thmbsp: Just for fun, I'll list the ones I have so far: Looking Back, The Blues Alone, A Hard Road, Moving On, Back To The Roots, Ten Years Are Gone, and The Best Of John Mayall. That last one has a really cool gatefold cover that folds out 3 ways, & a nice mix of good songs. :music:

One of my favorite laserdiscs is Blues Alive, with Mayall, Mick Taylor, John McVie, Albert King, Etta James, and Buddy Guy with Junior Wells, among others.

I believe this was reissued on DVD, but under a different title. Great concert, and an opportunity to see some artists in action who are no longer with us.

Jazz Blues Fusion

is a great disc, really not a bad song on it.I have quite a bit of his stuff having just purchsed the remasters which sound great by the way.

Mmmyip, I added The Turning Point and Jazz Blues Fusion to the collection today. :thmbsp: Still haven't listened, but I got several others too, & I'm researching my plunder real quick. ;)

I thought Mick Taylor left right before the "Turning Point" LP? Even on iTunes it says Taylor had left for the Stones before that record was in the can.

Can anyone confirm Mick's departure date from JMBB.
