EV HR9040 Horns - New Speaker Day

I'm pretty excited about today's haul. I have some big Bag End S15B-D's that I've refinished and thought about using for a large, sensitive 2 channel 2-way setup. These came up locally, with W bins and a pair of reconed JBL 15"s and a pair of EV 15"s. The seller included some Dayton audio 500hz crossovers, but they won't work with the tweeters, which are only good down to 1000 hz.

I don't have any tube gear currently to run with these; just some PA rack amps. I think I will run a rack crossover into a pair of stereo amps.

I also have a nice Luxman receiver, which might work well with a passive crossover setup. Lots of options. Maybe I should just run the W bins under 500 Hz with the EV horns and get a more mid-range friendly driver into the horns. But I think a budget approach is a good idea here.

Technics 1200's (and any other studio gear routed through Mackie mixer) > DJ Mixer > Mackie VLZ 1604 > Crossover (TBD) > QSC RMX and Crown amps > Bag End Bins/ EV Horns > large, low ceilinged room treated with condensed FG broadband panels and condensed FG bass traps

Any advice before I dive in to this project?

That Dayton driver has a recommended minimum crossover of 1600hz on a 12db/octave filter. They really have no business on those horns except to waste a lot of fiberglass and space, IMO.

Maybe I should just run the W bins under 500 Hz with the EV horns and get a more mid-range friendly driver into the horns. But I think a budget approach is a good idea here.
Large format, and budget approach are somewhat 2 very different ballparks. Kinda gotta pick which one you want to play in.

The 2225's would play up high enough to meet the Daytons on a more appropriate horn in the Bag End boxes. But, i'm not sure how the Bag End boxes will affect the higher end response. It doesn't really matter with a bass guitar, but is a bit more critical for hifi/music playback. 1600hz isn't unreasonable for that combination.

I tested the W bins Thursday. One had an 8 ohm EV and one had a 16 ohm JBL. Neither sounded anywhere near as good as the Bag Ends — I won’t be using them.

Yes I did read about the horns being designed for midrange — some threads were even claiming that they were good to 350hz or lower.

The specs of the Dayton’s say that they are good to 1000 Hz— I was thinking 1200 as a good crossover point to start with.

I have the Bag End drivers for the bag end bins, and don’t doubt Bag End’s rating of the box to 4 kHz, though I don’t think they provide how many dB down it is. I gig with the same drivers in a pair of smaller Bag End boxes and find them to have some good upper extension, though rolled off, which is perfect for bass guitar.

What drivers do you recommend in the 9040’s?

I did get the Bag Ends for free and the horns/drivers/folded bins were very cheap.

Not if you want the rated power handling. I quoted the specs in my first post, if you want the 60 watt power handling, 1.6khz 12 db slope is the minimum crossover. Assume the power handling at 1khz to not be a lot more than 20 watts. Diaphragm excursion increases exponentially as frequency is lowered.

It's not that the response will be down at all, on axis.

It's a) that the polar response of almost any known 15 inch driver will be narrowed to the beam of a pinspot at 4k. Most are really collapsing above 1khz.

and b) that the response curve of almost any known 15 inch driver loaded in a ported box of that net Vb is going to look something like a roller coaster in the upper octaves.

Again, these are almost non issues when the system is used as a producer, and may even be considered as voicing in some instances.
For a reproducer it may become less than desirable in those upper octaves for any kind of hifi, or critical listening. A XO in the 1khz - 1.6khz range would probably be pretty reasonable for any decent bass driver in those boxes.

What drivers do you recommend in the 9040’s?
As a mid only - EV DH1012, i think you can put a DH-1 or DH-2 diaphragm on it for more extension, but don't quote me on that. I'm not an EV guy so much as a Don Keele guy. He designed the HR9040.

For more extension and top end try to find a pair of Altec 906, they're a modified DH1012 and are supposed to play 500hz to 15khz. Sometimes they sell pretty reasonable.

Altec 288, 291, and 299 will also bolt up. But those are gonna get pricey.
 
Thank you. Yes I like to use my 15”’s on stage because the higher frequencies are sent more directly out to the audience — this keeps things tamer on stage, if that makes sense. The beaming is an advantage.

Thank you for the solid advice. I will keep an eye out for drivers on that list.
 
Compression drivers, all of them, within their formats can be historically traced back to 2 drivers, the original field coil Lansing 801(small format)which would become the Altec 802, and the Lansing 284/285(large format) which would become the Altec 288. ;)

Two key speaker systems, the Shearer system, and the Lansing Iconic were pretty much the commercial beginning, and without J K Hilliard and Dr John Blackburn much of the speaker world we know today may have never happened.
