I just picked up a Kenwood KA-3500 amp, a Kenwood KT-5300 tuner, a pair of Kenwood LS-405C speakers, a Kenwood KD-44R turntable, and a Technics SL-D2 turntable, all for $120. The amp and tuner appear to be in good over all condition, but they are pretty dirty. It might be nicotine, but I'm not sure. Most of it is coming off without too much trouble. Can anyone recommend a good cleaning product for silver face components? I haven't opened them up yet to see what they look like inside. From what I've read here on the site, the amp is pretty decent. Reviews I've seen on the tuner say that it's ok. I can't find any info on the LS-405C speakers though. They're in decent shape. They were re-foamed at some point. They aren't rubbing, but whoever did it wasn't too concerned about how they looked, as there is glue coming out from around the woofer cones on both. They could also use new grill cloth, and the grills don't stay on very well. I'll have to take a closer look at that. Not much info out there on the KD-44R turntable either. The arm lifts, but it won't cycle. It does have a black Ortofon cartridge.The SL-D2 looks like it just needs a head shell and cartridge. Over all, I think I did ok for the price.

Sweet! I love Kenwood. Those silver face units are very nice, and alone worth the price.

I use the multi-surface Windex myself for heavy duty cleaning. Don't rub too hard over the lettering though.

Those speakers are decent early 80's? models, but nothing special.

The KD-44R is a midrange turntable from the early 80s. I had a 21R a while back - these have a nice heft to them, unlike later 80's turntables. Probably needs a new belt. I'm guessing the Ortofon is an OM model cartridge, which can range anywhere from a good entry level cartridge to a very nice cartridge depending on the stylus model.
 
Download the SM at hifiengine.com and measure the DC offset on that prior to serious play. Nice snag btw.

I pulled the platter of of the KD-44R. Looks like it's direct drive, not a belt. I guess something isn't lining up where it's supposed to. And now I get to learn how it works.

Thanks! I'm becoming aware of the addictive part. Over the last few months I've also picked up a really nice Luxman R-404 receiver, a Luxman P-100 turntable and a pair of Allison LS-110 speakers from an estate auction. I was hoping to get them cheap and resell them, but I ended up paying about what they the were worth. I had to refoam the Allisons. Nice little system. I also scored a pair of Infinity Sterling SS-2005 speakers for $6. They are in nice shape, but they need to be refoamed. I also got a pair of Infinity Sterling SS-2003 with stands for $40 that are in really nice shape. I've paired them up with an Onkyo TX-8211 receiver that my brother in law gave me and an Onkyo 6 disc cd changer. The changer plays fine, but the drawer won't open automatically. I guess it needs new belts. I got that for $4. So once I'get everything cleaned up and working, I'll start reselling them. I've got all I really need with my Pioneer system, so anything else I pick up will probably be sold eventually.
 
I had that exact same amp and tuner a while back......a very nice sounding unit. I like most anything Kenwood. Nice score!
 
So, I got everything connected up, threw on the headshell from my PL-540 on the SL-D2 and fired it up. Everything works! The volume control needs to be cleaned, but otherwise it sounds good. I just realized that all the feet are missing from the amp and tuner. On to ebay for them and a shell and cartridge!
 
I just came across a Pickering V15/ATE-4 cartridge my bro in law gave me a while back. It needs a stylus, but it should work for the SL-D2.
 
Nice "haul" as they say. It's a shame the speaker baffles have been painted over. The baffles in this series were beautifully finished in wood veneer.

The woofer dust caps were embossed with the Kenwood name in gold originally.

Correction: The LS-403A had the veneered baffles. The "C" series were black.

I owned a pair of the 3-way version in the A - line. Very nice sounding speakers.

The only thing I had in the house at the time. It's called "Krud Kutter Heavy Duty Cleaner". It did a good job, but it didn't get everything. I'm going to get some "Nevr-Dull" wadding polish to finish it. It does a good job cleaning the aluminium on my motorcycle, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Yeah, I was disappointed when I saw they were the 405Cs. The As and Bs look much cooler with the orange face. They actually look better without the grilles.

Isn't it amazing that some folks just wont put in the effort to clean up things like this before trying to sell it so they get more for it? Thank goodness for us though.
 
It seems this character was too busy smoking the 8000 cartons of Kools to be bothered.
Nice cleanup tho, they look nice now.
