Favorite "Under the Radar" movie?

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

It is a 2005 comedic film noir featuring Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr. I thought it was fun and clever.

Most of these are available on Netflix, maybe not in the United States, but if you use a VPN you can find them.

Take Shelter (2011)
Taste the dread! Starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain.

Holy Motors (2012) French w/subtitles
Inexplicable.

Wake in Fright (1971) Australian
More dread, outback style. Hard to watch kangaroo scene.

The Pusher (original 1996) Danish w/subtitles
Nicolas Winding Refn's debut, directing young Mads Mikkelsen

Headhunters (2012) Norwegian w/subtitles
Headhunter moonlights as art thief. Steals from wrong guy.

Margin Call (2011)
Office drama about economic collapse, sounds boring, I found it anything but.
Big name ensemble cast.

I Saw the Devil (2010) Japanese w/subtitles
Violent Japanese revenge film

Blue Ruin (2014)
American revenge film set in the southeast. Caught me totally off guard. Director Jeremy Saulnier has a great career ahead if this is any indicator.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)

How I Live Now (2013)
American teen travels to British countryside, holiday interrupted by world war III.

Dogtooth (2009) Greek w/subtitles
A father keeps a close hold over his sheltered family. Pinnacle of bizzare.

In Bruges (2008)
Pitch black comedy. Starring Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell.

And a couple more Brendan Gleeson films.

The General (1998)
As Irish criminal Martin Cahill. Directed by John Boorman. Won best director at Cannes that year.
(The netflix version is pan and scan - rent the widescreen version elsewhere)

The Guard (2011)
As an Irish guard trying to catch smugglers with Don Cheadle.

"The Cell" (2000)

Starring Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, Vincent Donofrio

Jenny From The Block is a psychotherapist involved in a bizarre experiment, exploring a strange Alice In Wonderland-type dreamscape while trying to track down a serial killer. A hypnotic, off-the-wall story that keeps you coming back for more....

"Don Juan DeMarco" (1994)

Johnny Depp, Marlon Brando, Fay Dunaway

Depp is committed to a mental hospital....he wears the clothing of an 18th-century swashbuckler, speaks with a Castilian accent, and insists that he is "Don Juan DeMarco, the world`s greatest lover". Marlon Brando is a staff shrink who takes the case, and is eventually influenced heavily (as is the entire staff) by Don Juan.

Absolutely charming !

(1996)

Pretty decent stupid comedy and Bill Murray steals the show as Ernie McKracken.

Sucker Punch ...

Scantily clad ninja babes and a killer soundtrack. What's not to love?

Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979)

A Roger Corman production featuring the Ramones.

A movie that blows up a High School and sets fire to an American flag (an accident or so they claim) probably wouldn't go over as well today. :thmbsp:

Corman supposedly paid the (then somewhat naive) Ramones only $10,000 to use their music in the film.

The reinterpretation of "Tomorrow Never Knows" just highlights the movie wonderfully, plus Bjork's Army of Me.

The movie itself is about a rather dark chapter in our history, and some would say, our present, and that is mental health care.

Elvira: Mistress of the dark

I know its cheesy but I love it... Elvira is brilliant in it :)

Here north of Nashville, the ultra low budget tv station UHF Z17 used to show Elvira on Saturday nights. Me and my sis would watch it religiously on an old 19'' black and white tv. Ahh, good times.

Plus, Cassandra Peterson is the scantily clad honey on the cover of Tom Waits "Small Change" some say.

Sucker Punch is one of the few movie soundtracks in my collection. All good stuff, with an interesting mix of genres ...

Speaking of mixes, how about the Queen/Armageddon I Want It All mashup. Killer!

And I can't help but grin listening to the grand finale of Love is the Drug ... cheesy but spectacular!

Midnight showing of rock and roll high school was my first time allowed out late. New yorker theater. Gone now, alas

Street Kings based on a minor Elroy work is pretty good neo noir

Maybe a better title for this thread would be .....Under the Radar.....To You.....Now

Many of these films listed were well publicised and attended in the day.

Absolutely ... some of these are awfully darned mainstream, by mainstream characters ...

Here is another fav of mine and a real early film for both Jack Black and Seth Green called "Airborne" and features Team Rollerblade and some great skating scenes as well as funny High School Hockey. Some of the skating down the Devils Backbone in Cincinnati are incredible.
