FedEx recently lost Danamc's 9100. A few days ago I received a check for $121. Thinking that there had to be some sort of mistake, I contacted the claims person this morning. She tells me that, since the amp is 'vintage', and 'collectable', that it is subject to their Tariff guide, by which any vintage or antique or collectable item is limited to a $100 liability.

I'm so ****in' pissed I can barely type. I argued the matter for nearly an hour and got absolutely nowhere. In the letter I sent with the claim, I described it as a 'vintage' amp, but I tried to explain that it didn't mean the bloody thing was made in the 19th century. I believe she simply latched onto one word and is using it to avoid paying a full claim.

Is there any recourse here? Seems to me that FedEx would be on shaky ground, since I know that they have paid out on lost and damaged items more than this Bullshit $100 crap on many occasions.

Someone give me a hand here before I fly to Philly and go Postal on this bitch...

How much did you insure the package for? I have a large account with FedEx and may be able to help, provided it was insured for replacement value.
 
Insured for $500. In the claim. I asked for $450 plus return of the shipping costs, for a total of $474.35.

Seems to me they just make it all up as they go...I know damn well that lost/damaged gear has been settled for proper amounts.

My FedEx rep is calling in on your behalf now, and speaking to a supervisor.

She said that you're probably right about the word "vintage", and if it was described as stereo gear, amplifier, etc this wouldn't be happening. NEVER use "vintage" or "antique" in description fields as you'll run into this issue.

Hopefully I'll hear back from her in an hour or two.
 
They lost a McIntosh MC2205, actually it was put on the owners back porch and never found - got stolen. Was listed as an amplifier in the claim, I got over $1000 check to replace it at current valuation. I sent them a copy of eBay completed auctions for this model and that is what they paid.
 
Well, I have good news and bad news.

The claim has been re-evaluated, and you're going to be getting a second check :)

The bad news is it's only for about another $75. They are using Orion Blue Book value as a guide to determine its worth. Perhaps if you can find recent auctions as Terry did, you'll make more headway.

At least I was able to do something, and they reopened the case, so now the only question is of alternate proof of value.
 
I'd tell FedEx the Orion is the pawn shop bible and doesn't accurately estimate the value of anything. Here's a completed ebay auction for a 9100 KA-9100

$400 and thats "as is" not after a thorough cleaning and repairing. Thats easily worth another c-note.

Kamakiri is right. I sell and ship antiques, usually thru UPS, but I learned a long time ago never use vintage, antique, old, collectible, etc in your description. When I did and there was a claim it was always a problem and a huge arguement I lost.

Who might this go to? I'd need a contact, and I'd hope to God that it's not the Witch that I have already been dealing with. Even just speaking with her on the phone I could feel the lifeforce being sucked out of me.

I can find auctions galore where the 9100 sold for $375 - $400+, especially lately.

I know I am late comming in to this thread but it seems to me that insuring it for 500 dollars would or should act as a contract for a stated value. . . The "Intent of the Contract" would in my mind equal the insurance they sold you. . .

I am the kind of ass hole that would at least pay my lawer to write a letter or make a phone call. . . Especially with this kind of crap. . . I mean look at Vintage cars for example . . . That Audio Blue Book is another screw you deal IMHO. . .

I know you have turned this thing inside out and knowing you there is no stone left unturned. . .

They should not be able to sell you more than 100 dollars worth of insurance if they have no intention of paying the claim. . .
 
A friend contacted me last month telling me Fed Ex has changed policy for older electronics when damaged or lost.
That worried me alot as I use Fed Ex for shipping reel to reel overseas.
I called the claim department and asked what was going on.
They double checked new rules etc, but did not find anything about this. :dunno:
If you paid for $ 500.00 insurance you should recieve full coverage.:(
 
OK...ya'all aren't gonna believe this, but sitting on my bench right now is the lost KA-9100.

A gentlman in Omaha bought it from someone in the Pac Northwest a couple of months ago, and it apparently has some relay problems. He found AK, and contacted me for repairs. I've had it here (in a box) for about 10 days. I finally opened it up, and popped the cover off. I immediately saw that it was MY work, and that this IS the 'lost' unit.

The Omaha owner is digging up his contact info from the buyer. The major problem is that I never wrote down the serial number of the unit when in was here last August, but I recognize my work like a mother knows her kids. No one else would do the exact same things to the amp that I did, using the same parts as I would. It's just impossible.

WTF now? :confused:
 
That's pretty amazing EW. I lost a McIntosh MC275 to Fedex ground back in 2000. It never showed up. I even checked eBay to no avail. I too, think, I would be able to ID the unit by looking at the innards...
 
So, it seems that someone snatched it when you originally shipped it and then re-sold it to Pac-NW? Would be funny to find out it was a FedEx emp.

Most probably. In my case, I am sure a corrupt Fedex employee was responsible for the loss. The last scan showed it arrived in San Diego, but it was never delivered.

I wonder if it's possible to place a locating chip inside valuable electronics like they do with cars...
 
Surely you remember....

...taking photos of your work on this unit. You must have a shot of the back which clearly shows the serial #. Gotta nab that SOB that stole it Echo.
 
Wow... this is an amazing story.

In college, I worked at a mom & pop record store than sold some mid-fi stereo equipment. One night, someone stole my wallet which had my only credit card. I called the police and filed a report. The next day, a guy comes into the store and starts looking at equipment, vinyl, and CDs. He picks out about $500 worth of stuff. I ask him how we wants to pay. He says VISA and hands me MY credit card. I keep my poker face on and tell him I need to call it in. I assure it is no problem and I encouraged him to keep shopping. Instead of calling VISA, I call the local police. They come and arrest him. He still had my driver's license on him. What an idiot.
