That said, what are your opinions of the fisher 400 soundstage and affect of tubes?

Tubes are where it's at for music, live or reproduced. That's just the cold hard facts IMHO of course. If you want to get totally amazed again, try a Class A single ended triode. IMHO again :yes:

Hard to beat the OEM mix of Telefunkens and Mullards for the small-signal tubes.
Outputs... use what you can get! The new production EH 7868's seem to be fine.

My 400 has an excellent soudstage as do all my tube based stereos (which come to think of it, is all my stereos). Sometimes I think soundstaging is partly psychoaccoustical because it seems some people can more readily "create" the illusion for themselves than others. Also the recording has a lot to do with it too.

One day I showed my mother my 400, thinking it would bring up some nostalgic memories in her (it didn't). Then she pointed to the 400 and said, "how does that little box have so much music coming out of it" (it sits in the middle of my speakers). I then pointed out to her that the speaker she was standing next to is where the sound came from. Needless to say she was impressed and I was ear to ear smiles.

thanks for the replies, just heard that the newer, and much more expensive tube amps have a wider soundstage. the 400 sounds more compressed. either way im very happy with mine.

A 400 in good tune can hold its own in some pretty expensive company.

I bought one at an auction in the early 80s along with a Garrard Lab A70 TT and AR speakers (8" & a tweeter) in great condition for $5.00 . I think it is starting to feel it's age as when I moved it into our new family room it did not have the power to fill the room. The tone was good but not great. Highs seemed muted. Weak bass. I guess I'll put it on the bench and rebuild it at some point. I saw somewhere on this site where somebody has done just that. Is there any tweaking I can do or should not do?
