Seller called it a tuner but I suspect it's a receiver. Can anyone ID this unit please?

There were all kinds of iterations then, including a tuner/preamp. That might be what this is. An uninformed owner could take a lack of output connections to mean it's an AM/FM tuner. Not sure otherwise. I've never seen one up close.

It does resemble a 500-S somewhat, but that had output connections and output tubes and transformers. Similar generation product though.

It does look like a TA-600, chameloman72 is right, they are awesome. It could also be a TA-800. The TA-600 uses 7189 outputs, the TA-800 uses 7591 outputs, they are similar receivers otherwise. My TA-600 has mono FM. I'm not certain about the TA-800.

I'm pretty sure that's a TA-800. Mono FM, stereo source inputs. Should have an MPX output for a separate adapter like the MPX-100.

The TA-600 and TA-800 have essentially identical front panel layouts. However, the 600 has "600" in large script above the three center slide switches, and the 800 has its model number in much smaller type. It's really hard to tell, but the pic seems to have something above the three center switches, which would lead me to guess 600.

My friend bought it and I just helped him bring it home. It's a 600. No TA, just a straight 600. It's in a multi-component Bozak console but the speakers were already sold and all that remained was the cabinet with the 600 and a Dual 1209 TT.

The face plate was mint and the original paperwork for the Fisher, the Dual, an earlier Garrard and the Bozak speakers were all there.

It did not come with a multiplex adapter so only FM mono at this time. Next steps will be de-oxing, tube testing, etc, etc.

Good info. :thmbsp: For some reason I was thinking that the 600 had one fewer switch on the front.

Ok, got my exercise for the day. From the basement Fisherdude collection:

TA-600 on the top, TA-800 on the bottom. In the correct steel cabinets.

Nice TA's Fisherdude. I like the older style gold faceplates and brownish colored metal cabinets. My FM-100 (with added MPX 65) has that combo. I hope to locate a metal cabinet for my TA-600 one of these days.

I have very little experience with Fishers of this vintage. Thanks for the education.

What's the best way to clean up the front panels of Fishers from this era?

Very carefully. You can't be aggressive. At all.

The older (500-S, TA-600, X-101, etc.) have that smooth lacquered finish over the brass metal. We're all familiar with how the finish starts to deteriorate, and then the spots of tarnish begin to appear.

Here's the main problem...that tarnish is underneath what's left of the finish. If you try to remove the tarnished spots, you'll remove what's left of the finish, and then you'll have a shiny spot, and you're hosed.

All you can do is clean off whatever grime, dirt, cigarette tar, etc., that's on the surface. Use the usual suspects: Windex, mild soap & water, dilute ammonia, etc., whatever you like. However clean it gets, that's what you've got.

It's...you know...patina.:thmbsp:
