Not that I know of. They sure are making a killing ripping the public off for .90-1.00 for a 128k mp3. No need to give quality at the expense of 10x the storage and bandwidth at this point. It is all maximizing profits these days and that they have done to great success.

Look into a P2P program called Emule Plus from Sound Forge. You might find stuff you want. It has been very rare the times I could not find something of interest. If you have a router, you will have to learn about how to port forward to be truly effective.

One does see a fair amount of high quality rips (320k), APE and FLAC in the blogosphere and in member forums, especially music blog & forum sites dedicated to an interest in Jazz music. To many of these I have contributed, and from many of these I have received excellent rips, often from original vinyl as a lot of the more material is too obscure, OOP, etc., to ever become a candidate for a CD reissue, especially now with CDs on the way out (or down) and all of this digital file-based music "media" on the rise. Many of the Rock blogs that deal in the more esoteric & obscure material - psych, UK folk, prog and "difficult" music (think Nurse With Wound, Merzbow, etc.) - tend to offer CD (more rarely, vinyl) rips at decent bitrates, at least 192k but very often @ 256 & 320. Yeah, get that Azureus going and start finding the files, you'll be surprised by what's out there.

i am using a bittorent client and have found lots of flac files from the sites above.

Oink.cd.

If there's a better free source for FLAC out there I don't know it. I use uTorrent as my torrent client, and all the stuff seems to be really well encoded and well documented with EAC logsheets and everything.

Are you familiar with torrents?

It is why I put YMMV, you don't necessarily get the same treatment. I once went to a regular proper band's site, nothing shady at all, and got something that trashed my registery so I had to reformat my HD. Not everybody has an AV so should beware is all.
Needless to say it put the end to me not using AV software for good.

Until the RIAA succeeds in shutting it down, the Russian site, allTunes, http://www.alltunes.com/en-index.shtml offers extremely reasonable prices for an awesome selection of music. Prices are based upon the size of the files, for example the complete Abbey Road ranges from $2.17 for 192 kbps or $2.72 for 256 kbps VBR mp3's to $8.31 for FLAC lossless. Virtually every format is offered, even WAV. The site offers "786,601 tracks in 56,542 albums by 18,312 artists from $0.15* per song, $1.99* per album."

I have been using this service for quite some time and have never experienced a problem with billing or, even more importantly given that it is a Russian site, identity theft:smoke:

Do you know if there are any repercussions for using this site in the US? I mean legally.

The Russian site claims that it fully complies with all Russian copyright laws -

I appreciate the information but that doesn't answer my question as far as legal concerns in the US. If anyone knows anything about this, please chime in.

Rick

It's probably illegal in the US. In fact, I'd be sure of it.

But your chances of being caught while downloading is extremely slim, unless you go apeshit and your ISP notices 60GB worth of transfer in a week.

Uploading, on the other hand...I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a lot of people with open Wifi around you.

www.archive.org for all sorts of live shows has tons of FLAC as well as .mp3. Since these shows are user-recorded, it can take some wading around to find great sounding ones, but it's worth it.....and it's educational when you find out that you really like certain styles of music you never thought possible.

Linn has music that can be downloaded in CD quality FLAC files. They also offer Studio quality FLAC downloads at 24bit 48khz 743.4MB. Most of the CD quality FLAC downloads are $14-$15 which is about $5 less than getting the CD.

http://www.linnrecords.com/

I have not downloaded any of these but I do have a few CDs from Linn and the sound quality is excellent.
