"Focal" egg shaped speaker

Hey all,

Can somebody help identify these things? He claims they're Focal, but I have my doubts. The guy said he wants $200 for them, I said I'd get back to him.

Further info from seller:

"They are real original French made Imported fiberglass Egg enclosures from 1985"

Did Focal sell this type of thing?

I recall hearing about them with very good reviews. And they were made by Focal. One guy rebuilt a pair and put it in the parts express .project gallery. Said they had a great review in Speaker Builder now part of audioXpress)

see previou post

Does the $200 include the other tweeter dome? Might be able to salvage the one with a new foam ring but you'd be looking for at least one replacement. Appears to be a T101.

Well, I got them. Couldn't really pass them up and figure I can probably recover the two hundred if I have a change of heart as I'm willing to ship (unlike this seller)

They are HEAVY! The mids work well, but the tweeters are both non functional. Not sure of the extent of the damage to the one tweeter, but will perform some minor surgery tonight and see what I'm looking at.

If the mods wanna move this to the Speakers sub, feel free. Or I'll just start a new thread over there tomorrow.

Damn, $200 was a steal and well worth the expense of new tweeters for it . IIRC these were a fully fleshed design from Focal France and sold in kit form. Almost certain that Madisound sold them in the mid/late 80s and they were not cheap. The franc was strong against the dollar then (pre euro) and these were an attempt to drive down the cost on this speaker by removing the labor component. They were on par with Celesion SL600s (but way cooler IMO) and other similar period speakers. Downside is that the efficiency was something like 83dB and somewhat hard to drive. A good amp is mandatory.

Follow up question: Let us say I am able to get the original components in excellent shape (which I should be able to in the next week) and clean this thing up. What do you guys think it could go for with some decent exposure (Audigon, Ebay promoted listing, Barter Town, ect) ?

Huh, never heard of it. Interesting. If everyone starts using that service... who goes to the top? Anyway, sorry to derail the thread.

Madisound did sell these ( a long time ago!). I bought two pairs -one for me and one for my partner in the alarm business at the time (come to think of it - might have traded Larry a alarm system for the speakers?). Ours were sealed units and had enclosures made out of plaster of paris -as reported - not terribly efficient - excellent dispersion from the inverted dome tweeter and edgeless cabinet design. I think Tom at Madisound may have designed the crossovers -which were state of the art for that time. Sold them to a friend who blew the drivers and then had them stolen from him ( thieves were probably very disappointed -drivers were glued into the cabinets/eggs!).

I remember seeing these from the 80’s in Speaker Builder Magazine. Sadly I’ve tossed most if not all of my collection of that magazine. First rule never throw anything away as you’ll regret it someday. That’s also the first rule of hoarding. Life is so complicated. I now sell on eBay so I’ve come to realize the value of things, then again if everyone kept all their junk the rarity would go away. I’m presently cleaning the heck out of my house with little concern for future value. True junk without any value so don’t worry. Eggs are yummy, and Focal drives are sweet, thus sweet yummyness. Late response but dude you should have bought those eggs.

they’re still sitting in my closet, I haven’t thought about them in years.

I had a brief experience with them years ago. Only thing I remember is being surprised at how they sounded much better than I had expected, but nothing much really special. Looks cool with matching furniture probably. Those tweeters are still available I think. I have a new pair somewhere deep in my storage areas.
