I have been listening to Disc 1 from Merle Haggard's box set Down Every Road this morning. He is my favorite traditional Country artist, followed closely by Johnny Cash.
Others at the top might include George Jones and Willie Nelson.

Anyone else like to share their favorites in traditional Country music?

Hank Williams - "40 Greatest Hits", on CD
Has most of what I like, and is should be easy to get for less than $20.

I have most everything by Merle, nearly all of Willie's stuff (80 records and counting) and lately can't get enough David Allan Coe.

Down Every Road is solid all the way thru. The 3rd and 4th disc are start to finish amazing.

Pick up Willie and Leon, "One For The Road". You can thank me later. Masterpiece.
 
Don Williams newest "And So It Goes" is very good and is typical of Don's music, well recorded and not venturing to far from his previous work. Well worth a try if you like his style.
 
I really like Keith Whitley's album I can't Stand the rain. Great music and the sound quality is awesome.

Merle is awesome. I recently saw him play at a small venue and enjoyed that show more than dozens of others I have seen.

Never understood why Merle doesn't get the accolades of, say, Johnny Cash. Not a single thing to take away from the Man in Black, lord no, but Merle wrote many of his hits, has had a STAGGERING amount of output, most of it simply brilliant, and he's also one hell of a picker, fiddler, and god knows what else he can play.

Funny story - back in the radio days, a bunch of us went to see him. We were backstage, and there was the man, ten feet away, with his cut-down Stetson hat. We were staring, apparently, completely enthralled, and he turns and says...

"What the F$#k are YOU looking at??"


You just had to laugh. He didn't realize we were simply frozen, staring at a legend.

"The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy" was one of my favorites, sure would like to have a copy again. In general, my tastes are the sadder the better for country music.
 
I love all the old classics, Merle, Willie, Waylon, Johnny, etc.

If you haven't heard him, a new voice in town is Sturgill Simpson. Really great singer, and songwriter too. Much more akin to old style country than the "pop music with steel guitar" that passes for country these days.

Emmylou Harris. Crystal Gayle. The usual outlaws mentioned. Sonny James. Porter Wagoner. I have loads of this stuff. I saw George Jones in person nearby years ago. He was as good as his records, and that is saying something for me because I prefer studio albums.

George Strait has a great voice, too.
 
I've got some Hoyt Axton in my recent instant record collection. I know he's written some very well known songs and heard them performed by non country artists, but what am I going to find when I play them? He sure looks and sounds country to me, but maybe I is jus' iggorant.

It was a mixed bag for me, personally.
 
I'm a Merle Haggard fan also, he has one of the most soulful voices in all of music. I listen to his 40 #1's CD in my car all the time. I have Big City, Serving 190 Proof, and Okie From Muskogee: Live also.
 
The Roots Of My Raising

Listened to Merle Haggard and the Strangers The Roots Of My Raising last night, fun album with alot of dixieland styled songs. Also listened to mono pressing of George Jones Novelty Side, he swings on that album but songs can be popish. Merle is tops in my book, along with Dwight Yoakam, Lyle Lovett. Kenny Price gets overlooked because of his goofy nature but Northeast Arkansas Mississippi County Bootlegger is a great recording and performance.
