I agree that Dwight Yoakam is pretty excellent also, he has some great albums. This Time is probably my favorite of his.

I forgot.
Jamie Johnson. He's got a Hank Cochran tribute album out I need to pick up.He's about the only one that I'm aware of that is turning out anything close to old country these days. I'm sure there's others but you might try the tribute album on youtube. Eric

Leon Russell's first two Hank Wilson albums (haven't heard the third one) are master classes in classic country/western music.

I'm stuck in the bluegrass side, lol. Listening to Bill Monroe right now actually on vinyl. Changing to Dolly Parton's The Grass Is Blue next. Some of the guitar work on her album is fantastic, just wish they would release it on vinyl!!!

Dear God, we forgot Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family, AND Hank Williams. Jesus wept. Good save, chicks. And Merle Travis was a friend of my late grandparents. Seriously amazing guitarist.

No kidding. When was that? Year/Album?

Got it covered - see post #2

My brother's favorite is David Allen Coe, he has seen him live about a half dozen times.

It is getting to the point where I can barely stand to listen to the current country sounds on the radio. Even the good singers are trying to cash in on the pop-country sound.

But I would not go as far as Charlie Rich and burn the results of the Grammy Awards results if John Denver won the country music category.

Whoops! Thanks!

David Allan Coe is far better than I gave him credit for in the past. Go back and revisit at least his greatest hits. Guy had serious talent.

As for Charlie Rich, that man could sing anything, but he was a reluctant star.

Todays country doesn't tap into SAD. To me, country is songs of the heart - pain, loss, death.

It is NOT a platform to state how "country" you are (whatever THAT is) or how some lady has "kadonkadonk" or how you're going to deface your lover's vehicle, which, by the way, is vandalism.

Worked in country radio from 1993-2000. Even then, there was still some great country music. Detest the bad pop that country truly is these days.:thumbsdn:

The Devil made them do it.

Yeah, I know. I've seen the meme, too bad that it might put off many newbies from what Appalachian music is. The cognoscenti know how important these dudes were to American music, and it would great if Emmylou Harris did an album comprised of all their stuff. This comes from a guy who listened to a greatest hits album of Parliament this morning. Maybe some P. Glass next?

I listen to almost anything Haggard, Faron Young, Ray Price etc. A few other favorites are Leroy Van Dyke, Willie, Waylon, Johnny Cash, Jack Green. I like Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, and Vince Gill too, and I know they are a little newer, but I can listen to anything up to about 1990. After that, I consider it bubblegum country. Its just not traditional.
