Let me tell you what happened. Got home from work. Punched up FREE on DC CL. "Stereo and TV." Clicked. Shot email. Two minutes later, a cal. No kidding. I told her that she will get A LOT of calls with offers, etc. and those were some expensive speakers (to say the least). For those of you not familiar with Bethesda, MD, we are talking WEALTH. Now I think she will not call back. I gave my phone to my son with complete instructions if she should call back because I went to play racquetball. She did. I got home and returned the call. She puts her son on the phone (Why?) to explain what is there with model numbers, etc. Pioneer Elite receiver and DVD, Yamaha CD, etc. Son sounds interested, himself, but he says he is in a small apartment now. (Now how do I know that this whole think could tank in seconds?) The whole setup is mine. At least, that is what she said. She is a real estate agent and the sellers did not want the setup and the agent needed it GONE before the new owner move in on Thursday. I cannot believe it. Rented truck and waited for the address. I was going to keep everything but the telly which I was going to donate to Goodwill in Rockville, just north of Bethesda. Wednesday morning, day of pickup, I got an email. "I am really sorry to say the sellers have made other arrangements for the equipment. Sorry for your trouble." Trouble? What trouble? Got a promise. Changed work plans. Got my son involved who is a music tech major. Rented a truck. Lost sleep. What trouble? For your enjoyment, here are some pictures.

You don't think that all the emails (she guessed that she got 75 to 100) with offers to buy some of the stuff for $XXXX.00 would have been a give away?
I did offer to start hauling that burden away that evening. She wanted it all gone at once, which I was told I could do on Wednesday morning, then Wednesday afternoon, then not at all. As a real estate agent, she was very careful. I presume her son hijacked the load. I could hear him almost breathlessly swooning over the phone. I am not bitter but I was looking forward to hearing those speakers in my house.

Not to stereotype, but these kinds of people do exist.
First, they want to have something gone for free or at a price without doing any research and then when buyers line up, they change price.
I've been in few situations myself where I changed my work schedule to meet sellers and at the last moment, they call to tell, it's gone or it's sold to someone else or they don't want to sell. :thumbsdn:

I would have been there 15 minutes after the phone call. I would have stuffed the expensive stuff in my car...and roll the tv down the street with a free sign.
The way I work things, is I never do appraisals, I never make offers. Its the other party's job to research, price and advertise..I am the buyer/picker upper...not my job to state this stuff is worth thousands of dollars etc....Its sort of strange to say OMG this stuff is worth xxxx$...so when can I pick it up for free?
Face it there are rich people, people who just don't need the money...so why offer? I just picked up a honda rototiller for 5$....yeh I could have said omg this is worth 200$ but thats the price they gave me...I do sometimes offer extra money, if I can see the person is in need of it...but sometimes they turn me down. I offered 150$ for a mcintosh cd, receiver and B&O turntable...they guy said no 100$...
Point of the story, don't go and do appraisals....yes she got multiple offers via email or what ever....if you can still get them free....do it!

I read the story then read the comments and wonder if those commenting read the same thing I did. Seems the OP did everything possible within his means to make this happen. Sent an email, called , OFFERED TO START HAULING STUFF OUT IMMEDIATELY, interactively communicated with the 'sellers'. What more was he supposed to do?
Yeah it's easy to say that YOU would have been there Johnny on the spot. But there were details that you're not paying attention to. #1) the OP didn't have a vehicle big enough to haul EVERYTHING immediately (the sellers wanted it out all at once, not a little at a time) . It's great if you have a big vehicle, some folks don't. #2) The fickle nature of folks who offer stuff for free. Indeed, with a score of this magnitude being offered up, I frankly think it would have been a miracle if it actually did happen before the folks offering the stuff 'woke up' and decided to get money or keep it for themselves.
The man just lost out on a score. Cut him a break.

Even though you have a hard time seeing as so, It was better this way.
Maybe that is just me but personally I would feel bad moments after closing the deal.
One thing is to get something for half or even a third of the price but getting thousands of dollars for free, being a so-rich-I-dont-give-a-rats-as-for-money type of "seller" or not I would still feel like crap because in practice I had just deceived someone with a smooth helpful attitude.
Oh, and on a side note, usually rich guys are the worse. They know how it tastes to have big fat money accounts and they don't need to sell the stuff for profit so they don't mind having it for sale for a higher price and a longer time if need be.

I know a guy who sold a car that was worth close to 20 grand for $3500, to a used car salesman, who he knew was going to flip it for a ton of money. When he was questioned by a friend of his why, he simply said he wanted it gone, right now. His friend said he would of taken it right now, for a substantial larger amount, and was told in no uncertain terms, to mind his own business.
When it comes to money matters I've learned to give advice only when asked to. Those times, be honest and it usually works out.
The OP did all he could and got the shaft. Not the first time and won't be the last.

Well if anything I feel that if it's mean't to be it will happen. Karma will come to those who need it the most, I for one have been blessed with several great deals. I hope the OP is able to get something and I believe it will happen just a matter of time. Maybe the individual who got it really needed it or had it coming, we just don't know if it went for a price or for a "friend"
