Yikes... what a mess. I got a pair yesterday also but in much better condition and only $175 more.. I have the Heathkit version of these 3a's and that was what has me started on the AR adventure. I too found the ax's lacking after hearing the Heathkits. Now I will fix this pair of 3a's up and compare. I think when done correctly, they are superb and the bass is nothing like I've ever heard. The guys over at Classic are great and very helpful. Good luck.
The seller was a nice middle aged lady. They were an old boyfriend's speakers. I imagine he was a tinkerer to put that foam in there. It wasn't glued, I just removed it and threw it away. She was moving in with a new boyfriend and didn't need them in their consolidated household. It was a classic example of downsizing and no longer wanting "those heavy old things".
It seems I was the first caller, hours later. It happens!
I asked her to hold them till I would arrive, over an hour later. She said, "sure no problem, I won't sell them to anyone else in the meantime". A Class Act.
