Many moons ago my dad bequeathed to me, his eldest begotten son, his prized vintage Luxman R-1120A receiver. He'll probably have a conniption and cut me out of the will to inherit his McIntosh gear if he knew I was thinking of parting with it but honestly 'Harpyiae' (that's her name; half woman-half bird) needs to go to an audiophile who can give her the visual and aural "intercourse" she deserves. It's just sitting on a display shelf at my place, looking all sexy and whatnot. I had grand aspirations of matching it with a pair of Vandersteen speakers for the man-cave but what with the tightly packed housing in the lower mainland, I would never be able to exploit the sheer awesome power of this behemoth without a news-worthy neighborly altercation or two. It's like keeping a unicorn in a cage ... you just don't do that, common sense. I know I'll regret parting with it, but I guess if you love something as beautiful as this, you must set it free. Besides, I also have a few other 'not-so-serious' vintage receivers that don't instill obsessive-compulsive behavior in me I use on a day to day basis. So that's the Cole's Notes for it. Now onto the details.

This is probably Luxman's most coveted receiver. Manufactured around 1978 and was their flagship, top of the line model, shaking its 120-watt-per-channel-derriere in your face, saying "You can't handle me, big boy". These are actual watts from back in the day when they rated it on a scale of Stallone to Schwarzenegger to Chuck Norris to Bruce Lee to the glory of God Himself; not this random Pi to the N'th exponential number they throw onto packaging nowadays to smoke-screen you. Honestly, the 2000 watt systems of today is like wafting a greasy fart in your general direction, compared to the intimate warmth of full-bodied sound from back then. I had it fully serviced last year by A-Tech Electronics in Vancouver for general maintenance and everything is working as it should and in original condition, so yeah she has all her own teeth. Not mint, but as good as they come without being housed in a hyperbaric chamber. For something over 30 years old, it's in amazing condition. But if you're someone who insist on finding flaws in this world, I'll disclose that there are some microscopic scratches if you stick your nose to the surface to have a look, one indent on the walnut veneer (not a scratch but a small 1 inch indented line from being laid on it's side against a piece of solder or something), and one small scratch on the metal edge of the face about 3/4 inch long. This is the second iteration of this model, denoted by the A suffix in the model number (versus the R-1120). The only difference, from what I understand, is removal of the DIN input connector (who uses that anyway) and ganged IC speaker terminals vs individual connectors. But otherwise one and the same. Now I'm pretty firm on the price as these babies sell for $400 plus at online auctions in so-so condition, when and IF they ever get listed. I've seen one sold for $575 back in 2006. Keep in mind these retailed for a cool grand ($1000) back in the late 70's; that's about the US national debt, accounting for inflation and all, so no this is not a toy like an iPad or something. If the asking price makes you uneasy, perhaps a Fisher or Mitsubishi or Electrohome receiver from the late 90's is more your flavour. But if you are serious about your insatiable lust for electronics, we can talk. If you can prove to me using pie charts and Venn diagrams, that the asking price is too high, I may budge "a little" but much lower and she goes back onto the display shelf to stay until the spell of the wilting flower petals can be broken by a pure-of-heart, handsome and not so broke-ish prince. SERIOUS inquiries and local cash sale only please. Also, sorry but I'm not interested in trades, PayPal, Western Union money orders or shipping to your nephew in Nigeria for a grad present. That's why they never invaded after Pearl Harbor. Their planes wouldn't have worked without a converter/transformer and this was before ebay, so they couldn't get them.
