G22000...Tuner-Preamp very good, Power Stage, damaged...

Let's start by having a n00b resurrect an old thread here.

There is a reason for it though, and its not just laziness!

I wish to thank Kale for starting this thread. I recently put new drivers in my mains, seeing Kale's work, and listening to my wife prod me to do something with it; I have finally opened my g-22000. I hope mine turns out half as nice as yours there!

Ordered a set of caps for the amp, top to bottom. Hopefully they will be here within a few weeks. I may need to lean on some of you for info if re-capping her does not fix my issue.

Great reading here, lots of knowledgeable folks. I hope that I will have something to offer this community.

Wilsonite, I am glad that you decided to give another chance yours Sansui, and here I wish to say you couple things about that; first of all do not hurry! Take a time, some day you will work on it half of hour, someday 6 hours, but do not hurry. Another thing what I wish to say you, every part what you will dismount, take a picture BEFORE you dismount it, that will help you a lot later.
Do not trust marks on the board, because sometime they are wrong, so if you replace electrolytic capacitor, put the new one exactly as the old was.

After a long time I had to reopen the receiver part of the G22000… it had a contact problem in main volume pot (ALPS RK40, some kind of special version).
I didn’t open volume pot in time when I did a full restoration, because I was thinking that it was in really nice condition.
After I opened it yesterday, really it was in nice condition, very clean and dry, but it had oxidation issue, so because of that it was not working at small signal level as it should be…
Maybe you didn’t see how main volume potentiometer for G22000 looks like inside… so here they are pictures…

I wonder if these ALPS volume pots are unobtanium... I have seen several variations of ALPS RK40 and maybe a new pot could be reinstalled instead?

Yuk...the brushes / contacts have that nasty brown resin type coating from cigarette smoke, old dried lubricant, and regular air pollution.

No potentiometer or switch is safe from that stuff. The only way to be certain that it is cleaned off fully and properly is to tear the switch down and get to work.

Here in Japan, were smoking is still very popular, that brown stuff on switches is always something to deal with.
