I had the privilege of taking a Jazz Appreciation Course with Gerald Wilson my senior year at CSUN in 1978. I tremendously enjoyed his insight, accomplishments, and love for the music. He had a great connection with the students, and respect of the students in the class. I decided to have a little fun and played some excerpts of the Ray Stevens version of "In the Mood" (with chickens filling in for all the instruments) for him during a break in class. He was laughing about what he had heard and later asked me to meet him during the second break so he could hear the whole piece. It was great seeing a man with such a reputation and experience in music, taking such delight in a very different interpretation of an old classic. He was a wonderful instructor, opened some new doors musically for me, and this is a fond memory that I will treasure always.
